Old Westbury extended its win streak to seven

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball jumped ahead early with a strong opening half to capture Tuesday's 65-44 Skyline Conference Play4Kay win over the visiting the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (16-4, 12-2 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.

Trailing 8-5, Charlotte Renker's lay-in with 5:57 left sparked a 15-3 Old Westbury (18-3, 11-3 Skyline) run to give the Panthers the lead for the final 35:13 of play.  The Panthers used a 17-4 run from 9:29 to 4:16 to extend the lead to double-digits, 37-15.  Jordyn Hellpap scored eight unanswered points to trim the the Knights' deficit to 14 points with 2:14 left before Old Westbury pushed the lead back to 18 points with 11 seconds left to take a 41-24 lead into intermission.

Old Westbury continued to grow its lead  throughout the second half to build a 20-point cushion for the final 10:57.  Davida Warren's layup extended the Panthers' lead to a game-high 26 points (60-34) with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Ruth Vargas finished with game-highs of 17 points (6-of-13 FG, 5-7 FT) and seven steals (tied career-high) to go along with seven rebounds (four offensive) and one block.  Renker followed with 13 points (6-of-8 FG), eight rebounds, two steals and one block.  Monique Joseph contributed 11 points, seven rebounds (four offensive) and four steals.  Tori Bellings scored 10 points (5-of-11 FG) while Jasmine Robinson nabbed seven steals.

Hellpap paced Mount Saint Mary with 10 points and two steals.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 37.7 percent (26-of-69) from the field, 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from 3-point range and 55 percent (11-of-20) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Mount Saint Mary hit on 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the floor, 30 percent (3-of-10) from beyond the arc and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the charity stripe.  Both teams were tied in the rebounding department (44-44), while Old Westbury scored 12 second-chance points off 21 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers held the advantage in steals (21-12), blocks (3-2) and assists (17-8) while scoring 31 points off 35 Knight turnovers.

YESHIVA UNIVERSITY MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues its homestand on Thursday (Feb. 9) with a Skyline Conference showdown against the Yeshiva University Maccabees at 8 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.
