@OW_Panthers Baseball jumps ahead early to capture 8-2 win from Illinois

Old Westbury improved to 3-1 at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with Thursday’s win

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball took the lead early and never looked back Thursday morning to collect an 8-2 non-conference win from the Illinois College Blueboys (2-6) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.

Old Westbury (5-4) pounded out three-straight first-inning singles as Tommy Ziegen (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R) drove in Jesse Russo (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 R) for the game's initial run on Illinois starter Dentler Loschen (L, 0-1; 6.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 0 BB, K).  Two batters later, Old Westbury doubled its advantage with a run-scoring double by Dean Sheridan (2-for-4) to plate home Ziegen.

David Hawley (2-for-5, 2 RBI, R) slapped an infield grounder to advance Carlos Balmaceda (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) home for what proved to be the game-winning run in giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

Illinois answered in the fifth with two runs on three singles off Panther starter Preston Zanon (W, 1-0; 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 3 K).  Austin Gusewelle (2-for-5) singled to score Eli Fox for the Blueboys' first run, and two batters later made it a one-score game with a Taw Fredrickson's sacrifice fly to advance Connor Melton home.

Old Westbury blew the game open with a three-run seventh inning with three-straight run-scoring hits by Russo, Hawley and Ziegen.

Russo lifted a two-run single to right field in the eighth to settle the 8-2 final.

Vinny Negri scattered three hits in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to record his second save of the season.

GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY BISONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues play Friday morning in Fort Myers, Florida at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic with a non-conference showdown against the Gallaudet University Bisons at 9 a.m. from Lee County Player Development Complex No. 3.
