@OW_Panthers Baseball earns 11-6 victory over Gallaudet

Old Westbury collected its fourth win in five games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball used an 11-6 victory Thursday morning over the Gallaudet University Bison (5-10) to win for the fourth time in five games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. 

Old Westbury pounded Gallaudet starter Michael Ehlers (L, 1-0; 5 IP, 14 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 3 BB, 5 K) for fourth-straight hits as Kevin Lao's (2-for-4, R) double broke the scoring ice to plate home Tommy Ziegen (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R) for the first-inning advantage. 

The Panthers took a 3-0 lead in the third inning with back-to-back RBI singles from Dean Sheridan (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R, SB) and Paul Rapoli (4-for-4, 2 RBI). 

Old Westbury blew the game open in the fourth with five runs on six hits.  Nick Cordero (2-for-5, 2 R) tripled before Jesse Russo (4-for-6, 3 R, 2 RBI, 2 SB) singled him home for the 4-0 lead.  Two batters later, Ziegen slapped a two-run double to score Russo and Jesse Matos (2-for-3, RBI).  With two outs, Sheridan singled in Ziegen for what proved to be the game-winning run, followed by Rapoli's RBI single to extend the lead to eight. 

Russo made it a 9-0 game with a RBI triple before Matos scored him on a sacrifice fly to stretch the lead to 10 in the fifth inning. 

Gallaudet posted its first run in the fifth with a RBI single by Frank Diaz (2-for-4, 3 RBI, R) off Panther starter Jason Espinal (W, 2-0; 5 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 0 ER, BB, 4 K). 

The Bison scored four runs in the sixth off reliever Christian Ramkissoon (0.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, K) to slice the deficit to five (10-5). 

Old Westbury tacked on one run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly by Ziegen that scored Russo to push the lead to six.

Cameron Upton delivered a two-out triple in the eighth off reliever Steven Tellerias (5 H, R, 0 BB, 4 K) to advance Kyle Gumm home to settle the 11-6 final. 

Tellerias fanned four Bison in 3.1 innings of work to pick up his first-career save.   

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY BLUE JAYS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Saturday morning in Fort Myers, Florida with a non-conference showdown against the Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays (6-2) at 9 a.m. from Terry Park Sports Complex No. 2.
