FORT MYERS, FLÂ ---Â (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)Â SUNY Old Westbury baseball closed out play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Saturday morning with a 5-3 setback to the John Hopkins University Blue Jays (7-2) in Fort Myers, Florida.
Old Westbury (6-5) starter
Trey Pizzutello (L, 2-3; 5 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, BB, 3 K) retired his first eight batters faced before allowing a double to Tim Kutcher for the game's initial hit.
Johns Hopkins broke through in the fourth inning with a timely two-out hit as Daniel Albert took Pizzutello deep with a grand slam. Â
Mike Eberle led off the Blue Jay fifth with a triple and then scored off a sacrifice fly by Brian Lin to make it a 5-0 game.Â
Opposing Pizzutello was Alex Ross (W, 1-1; 7 IP, H, ER, 3 BB, 12 K), who took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning. Â
Dean Sheridan led off the frame by cranking his first-career home run over the right field fence to end Old Westbury's offensive drought. Â
David Hawley and
Tommy Ziegen opened the Panthers' ninth with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Sheridan lifted a sacrifice fly to right to score Hawley before
Kevin Lao doubled home Ziegen to settle the 5-3 final.Â
Josh Hejka then came on to retire
Paul Rapoli and
Carlos Balmaceda to register his second save of the season.
