Old Westbury defeated Farmingdale State 2-1 in Sundayā€™s series finale

OLD WESTBURY, NYĀ ---Ā (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)Ā SUNY Old Westbury baseball closed out the week Sunday afternoon with a split in Skyline Conference home action versus the Farmingdale State College Rams (9-10, 6-2 Skyline).Ā  Farmingdale State claimed victory with a 10-9 decision in the opener before Old Westbury (11-9, 3-3 Skyline) solidified the series split with a 2-1 win in extra innings.Ā 

Game 1: Farmingdale State 10, Old Westbury 9
Farmingdale State capitalized on a fielding error by right fielder Paul Rapoli (3-for-5, 3 RBI) in the fourth inningĀ  that allowed the game's first two runs to score on Panther starter Trey Pizzutello (ND, 7 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K).Ā  The Rams followed with a RBI single and then made it a 5-0 game two batters later with Domenic Palumbo's (3-for-4, 3 RBI) two-run homer over the left field fence.

Old Westbury answered with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame to end Ram starter Matthew Constantine's (ND, 4 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 0 BB, 2 K) outing.Ā  Rapoli's RBI single scored Kevin Lao for Old Westbury's first run.Ā  Two batters later, Carlos Balmaceda (2-for-4) singled home Dean Sheridan before Jesse Matos produced Old Westbury's fourth-straight single to score Rapoli and Louis Sileno.

Rapoli gave Old Westbury the lead in the fifth with a two-run single off Ram reliever David Otero Jr.Ā  Old Westbury took a 7-5 lead two batters later when Sheridan advanced home as Balmaceda grounded into a double play.

The Rams made it a 10-7 game in the eighth by scoring five runs on three hits and one walk charged to reliever James English (L, 0-2; 0.1 IP, 3 H, 4 R, BB).

Old Westbury made it a two-score game in the eighth as Nick Cordero crossed home plate by advancing on Jesse Russo's infield grounder.

Tommy Ziegen (3-for-5, 2 R) took Rams' reliever Ryan Mallon (W, 1-1; 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, BB, 4 K) Ā deep over the left field fence to lead off the ninth to settle the 10-9 final with his fourth home run of the season.

Locked in a pitcher's duel early on, Vincent Rice singled to lead off the Rams' fourth inning to collect the game's first hit.Ā  Three batters later, Palumbo lifted a sacrifice fly to right field off Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (ND, 4.2 IP, H, R, 6 BB, K) to score Rice for the 1-0 lead.

Old Westbury broke into the hit column in the bottom of the fourth with a single by Lao that scored Ziegen (2-for-4) as a fielding error by right fielder Brandon Ernest helped the Panthers tie the game.Ā 

The Rams worked three-straight walks off Heidenfelder to end his outing in the fifth inning.Ā  Reliever Jason Espinal (2 IP, 0 H, BB, K) took over and escaped out of Heidendelder's two-out bases loaded jam.Ā Ā

Reliever Daniel Aguilo (W, 1-0; 2.1 IP, H, K) was called on with two outs in the top of the seventh to work his way out of a situation that had runners at the corners.Ā  Aguilo induced a fly ball by Dalton McCarthy to center field to hold off the Rams.

Old Westbury delivered in the ninth inning as pinch hitter Louis Sileno worked a bases loaded walk by Constantine (L, 3-2; 4 IP, 4 H, R, 0 ER, 2 BB) to score Ziegen for the game-winning run.Ā  Ziegen singled to lead off the frame four batters earlier.
