@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball opens season with sweep of York and Centenary

Old Westbury produced a season-opening win for the first time since 2013

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball opened the 2017 season with straight-set sweeps over visiting York College Cardinals (25-15, 25-11, 25-19) and Centenary University Cyclones (25-15, 25-12, 25-22) Friday afternoon inside Clark Athletic Center.  The season-opening win was Old Westbury's first since 2013, while the sweep was the Panthers' first since September 22, 2012.

Old Westbury came out swinging in the first set, landing eight kills on 18 attempts to hit a match-best .222.  The Panthers finished the match hitting .113 compared to York's -.082 output.  The Panthers totaled 18 aces to outserve York, 18-4.

Sofia Goris served four of her game-high seven aces in the third set to help secure Old Westbury's win.  Kristin Grieshaber's 17 assists directed the offense while she contributed seven digs on defense. Sidasia Johnson nailed down a game-high seven kills on nine swings to hit .667.  Marie McKenzie followed with four kills to hit .400.  Nikia Gardon chipped in with seven digs.

Kassandra Diaz's seven assists moved York's offense.  Argenis Morales had five kills as Chayana Jiminez served three aces. Morales added eight digs.

Against Centenary, Old Westbury hit .421 during a dominant second set.  The Panthers finished the match hitting .208 while Centenary struggled at a -.015 clip.  Old Westbury also owned a 15-4 ace advantage.

Grieshaber powered the Panther offense with 20 assists, six aces and three kills while contributing five digs.  Jazmine Ortiz slammed seven kills on 12 swings as Johnson followed with six kills.  Johnson served four aces while Goris and Shanayia Lloyd each compiled three and two, respectively.  Goris also scooped seven digs to pace the defense.

Melissa Krueger dished out 11 assists to lead the Cyclones.  Amanda Fullem had five kills and Valentina Suizzo followed with four.
