@OW_Panthers Women’s Soccer snaps skid with 2-1 road win at Mitchell

Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Sept. 30) for a Skyline Conference showdown against Farmingdale State College

NEW LONDON, CT --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's soccer broke a five-game losing streak Wednesday afternoon with a 2-1 win over the Mitchell College Mariners (1-5-0) in non-conference road action from Alumni Field in New London, Connecticut.

Mitchell jumped ahead in the 36th minute off Lindsey Fairbank's attempt from the right side that landed past Old Westbury (2-7-0) goalie Alexa Higgins (1-6-0) for the 1-0 lead.  Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, Old Westbury held the 8-5 advantage in shots due in part to four attempts from Nicole Jones.

After playing through five-consecutive shutouts, Old Westbury broke through in the 53rd minute as Gianna Levine finished a run from Cara Normile to make it a 1-1 game.  Levine's goal was the first of her career while the assist from Normile was her first of the season.  Moments later, Alysha Annarella drilled a free kick through Mariner goalie Jordan Lohneiss (1-5-0) in the 64th minute to settle the 2-1 final with her first-career goal.

Higgins secured Old Westbury's win by stopping nine shots to register her third-highest save total of the season.  Lohneiss made nine saves in defeat for Mitchell.

In the end, Old Westbury held the edge in shots (17-14) and shots on goal (11-10) while both teams took three corner kicks.  Jones finished with seven shots (five on goal) and Levine followed with five (two on goal).

FARMINGDALE STATE COLLEGE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (2-7-0, 1-1-0 Skyline) returns home Saturday (Sept. 30) for a Skyline Conference showdown versus the Farmingdale State College Rams (3-4-2, 1-0-0 Skyline) at 12 p.m. from Panther Park.

Fans are encouraged to take part in a post-game dedication ceremony for the late SUNY Old Westbury assistant women's soccer coach Jimmy Kiriakos.
