@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball closes out season-series with Mount Saint Mary

Old Westbury remains at home on Saturday (Jan. 13) for a Skyline Conference showdown against St. Joseph’s College (Brooklyn)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball played from behind for the final 28:15 of play Wednesday evening to drop a 76-51 Skyline Conference decision to the visiting Mount Saint Mary College Knights (6-8, 6-3 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  The setback allowed Mount Saint Mary to sweep the regular-season series for the first time since 2013-14.

After falling behind first, Old Westbury (4-8, 3-4 Skyline) jumped ahead with back-to-back 3-pointers and a Yancy Ulysse jumper to cap an 8-0 run.  A trio of 5-0 spurts knotted the game at 15-all with 9:41 left.  Trailing for the opening 11:45 of play, Mount Saint Mary took control of the game by grabbing its first lead (21-20) off Gerard Nocera's 3-pointer.  Nocera's triple ignited a 15-0 run that made it a 33-20 game.  Old Westbury pulled within nine points (33-24) before Mount Saint Mary outscored Old Westbury 9-5 in the final 2:26 to take a 41-29 lead into intermission.

Down by as many as 15 points in the first half, Old Westbury cut its deficit to nine in the opening minutes of second-half action.  Midway through the stanza, Terrin Roland sank a pair of free throws to help Old Westbury pull within eight (55-47).  Mount Saint Mary later built its lead back up to double-digits with a 19-2 run over the final 7:41 to secure the 25-point win.

Roland finished with 11 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals to pace Old Westbury.  Ulysse added 11 points and a career-high three blocks while Stanley Baker rejected two shots.  Preston Powell nabbed three steals.

Kendall Francis led the way for the Knights as he recorded a game-high 19 points (8-of-9 FT) while hauling in five rebounds. Nocera (15 points), Connor Bacci (10 points), and Andrew Holmes (10 points) all scored in double figures.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 34 percent (17-of-50) from the field,  20 percent (5-of-25) from 3-point range and  63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Mount Saint Mary hit on 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the floor, 37 percent (10-of-27) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (16-of-20) from the charity stripe.  Mount Saint Mary won the boards battle, 35-33, while scoring 11 second-chance points off seven offensive rebounds. The Knights converted 20 Panther turnovers into 28 points.  Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in assists (15-13), steals (6-5), points in the paint (30-22) and bench points (32-13) while Old Westbury led the way in blocks (6-1) and fastbreak points (10-0).
