Renker’s double-double leads @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball at USMMA

Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Jan. 20) to host Purchase College for a Skyline Conference showdown

KINGS POINT, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball faced a 62-61 Skyline Conference road setback on Thursday evening against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (12-4, 8-3 Skyline) from Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, New York.  The loss is Old Westbury's first at USMMA since falling 53-42 on February 1, 2007.

Old Westbury took the early advantage 33 seconds in with a layup by Destiny Marino.  Moments later, Monique Joseph's layup doubled Old Westbury's advantage to make it a 10-5 game with 7:12 left in the opening period.  USMMA answered with a 14-2 run to take a 21-14 lead due in part to Old Westbury misfiring on 10-of-11 shots from the field during that stretch.  Davida Warren's layup with one second left in the first quarter sparked a 17-0 Panther run that was capped by Tyra Bellings' jumper with 1:49 showing on the first-half clock for Old Westbury's 10-point lead (31-21).  Old Westbury outscored USMMA by 14 (19-5) in the second quarter to take a 35-26 lead into intermission.

The Panthers saw their lead grow to 13 (40-27) off Marino's free throw with 7:50 left in the third quarter.  USMMA then outscored Old Westbury 10-2 over the next 3:02 as five different Mariners tallied points to chip their deficit to five (42-37).  Old Westbury would hold an 11-point lead (48-37) following Joseph's layup with 3:06 left in the third period.  The Mariners scored eight unanswered points over the final 2:37 to trail 48-45 heading into the fourth quarter.  With 6:38 remaining, Gabrielle Salazar converted a pair of free throws to put USMMA in front, 53-52.  Bridgid McNeill replied with a jumper to give the Panthers a 54-53 lead.  With the game tied at 57-all, Charlotte Renker dropped in two-straight layups to give the Panthers a 61-57 lead with  1:21 showing on the clock. USMMA fought back in the final 21 seconds by scoring five unanswered points as Kaleigh D'Arcy banked in the game-winning layup with eleven seconds to go.  Following a timeout, Tori Bellings missed Old Westbury's go-ahead layup with six seconds left.

Renker finished with 13 points (6-of-9 FG) and 16 rebounds (eight offensive) to register her seventh double-double this season (18th-career) in leading Old Westbury.  McNeill followed with 10 points (5-of-7 FG) and two blocks. Joseph chipped in with a game-high six steals while Tori Bellings dished out five assists and swatted away two shots.  Warren contributed nine points and seven rebounds while Tyra Bellings nabbed three steals off the bench.

D'Arcy dropped a game-high 20 points (7-of-10 FG) and swatted away five shots while Shelby Peters brought down 11 rebounds to go with eight points and four blocks for the Mariners.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 39.4 percent (28-of-71) from the floor, 20 percent (1-of-5) from beyond the arc and 30.8 percent (4-of-13) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, USMMA connected on 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor, 20 percent (3-of-15) from 3-point range and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the free-throw line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 47-31, while scoring 15 second-chance points off 24 offensive rebounds.  USMMA scored 20 points off  22 Old Westbury turnovers.  Old Westbury held the edge in assists (13-8), points in the paint (48-24), bench points (14-4) and steals (12-10), while USMMA finished with a 10-5 advantage in blocks.
