Trio of double-digit scorers lift @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball to Skyline road win at Yeshiva

Old Westbury continues its five-game Skyline Conference road trip on Saturday (Jan. 27) versus Farmingdale State College

MANHATTAN, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball held off a late charge to prevail with a 70-68 Skyline Conference road win over the Yeshiva University Maccabees (6-9, 4-6 Skyline) Tuesday evening from Max Stern Athletic Center in Manhattan.

Old Westbury (7-10, 6-6 Skyline) took the early advantage just four seconds in with a layup by Alan McDonald.  Moments later, the Panthers jumped out to a 13-8 lead thanks to a 9-0 spurt from 16:04 to 13:58. The run was kicked off by a Preston Powell bucket from beyond the arc and capped by Brandon Thomson's three-point play.  Stanley Baker chipped in by knocking down a jumper with 10:59 to play in the opening half to give the Panthers a four-point advantage (17-13) on the Maccabees.  Yeshiva responded with a 9-0 run of their own as Simcha Halpert scored five-straight points to put the Maccabees up six (25-19) with 4:51 remaining on the first-half clock.  Old Westbury finished the half strong by compiling a 7-2 spurt sparked by a Thomson trey with 1:59 remaining as the Panthers tied the game at 32 to head into the break.

Coming out of halftime, the Panthers set the tone offensively by knocking down baskets in three-straight possessions, including a 3-pointer by Powell to give them a four-point lead (39-35) with 18:30 remaining.  At 18:17, Halpert knocked down a triple to pull Yeshiva within one (39-38) before Tal Gweta's 3-pointer followed 32 seconds later for the Maccabees to take a 41-39 lead.  Starting at 17:02, McDonald scored seven-straight points to push the Panther lead to three (46-43) with 14:23 remaining.  Thomson then hit another three to extend the Panther lead to six (49-43) with 13:42 to go.  With the game knotted at 56 and 7:45 remaining, Gabriel Leifer dropped in a layup to give Yeshiva its final lead (58-56) of the night before David Rodriguez's triple ignited an 11-3 Panther run over the next 4:55 to extend Old Westbury's advantage to a game-high nine points (70-61).  Yeshiva scored seven unanswered points in the final 54 seconds before Halpert misfired on a last second 3-pointer.

McDonald finished with 17 points (7-of-15 FG), seven rebounds and two blocks in his first-career start to lead Old Westbury.  Thomson poured in 17 points (6-of-10 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) and tied his season high with seven rebounds.  Yancy Ulysse scored 13 points (5-of-10 FG), grabbed eight rebounds and dished out five assists (tied season-high).  Powell and Terrin Roland nabbed two steals apiece.

Halpert led all scorers with 23 points to go along with eight rebounds, six assists and two steals to pace Yeshiva.  Eli Mamann contributed 16 points off the bench while Leifer chipped in 10 points, eight rebounds and a game-high three steals.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 51 percent (26-of-51) from the floor, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from beyond the arc and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, Yeshiva connected on 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 41.2 percent (14-of-34) from 3-point range and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free-throw line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 35-33, while scoring four second-chance points off three offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury scored 16 points off 13 Maccabee turnovers.  Yeshiva led the way in assists (22-15), steals (7-6), fastbreak points (10-4) and bench points (23-7) while Old Westbury held the edge in blocks (5-0) and points in the paint (30-20).
