Four double-digit scorers pace @OW_Panthers Men's Basketball at Farmingdale State

Old Westbury continues its five-game Skyline Conference road trip Tuesday (Jan. 30) at Sarah Lawrence College

FARMINGDALE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball were unable to recover from a late first-half surge to drop a 84-74 Skyline Conference road decision Saturday afternoon to the Farmingdale State College Rams (11-6, 9-3 Skyline) from Walter A. Lynch Sports Center in Farmingdale, New York.  With the setback, Old Westbury (7-11, 6-7 Skyline) has now lost five out of its last six contests at Farmingdale State since 2013-14.

Both teams traded leads in the early goings before Old Westbury scored seven-unanswered points during a 2:01 stretch to grab a 15-11 lead with 11:24 left in the opening half.  Following a Alan McDonald layup with 9:59 remaining, Farmingdale State scored 11-straight points to go up by eight (25-17) with 7:26 showing on the first-half clock.  Liam Monaghan's 3-pointer at 8:58 helped the Rams grab the lead for good, 19-17.  Yancy Ulysse dropped in back-to-back layups to chip Old Westbury's deficit to four (25-21) before Farmingdale State closed out the final 5:09 with a 15-5 spurt to take a 14-point lead (40-26) into intermission.

Playing behind for the final 28:58, Old Westbury made it an 11-point game (41-30) with a pair of Ulysse free throws followed by a McDonald jumper 57 seconds into second-half play.  Moments later, Monaghan's free throw at 15:54 set the Farmingdale State lead to 17 (49-32).  Matthew Graham converted a three-point play to extend the Farmingdale State advantage to a game-high 19 points (68-49) with 7:49 remaining.  Khalil Wilson connected from deep eight seconds later to spark a 19-8 Panther run to pull within eight (76-68).  Old Westbury continued to push in the final minutes as a pair of Terrin Roland free throws trimmed the deficit to six (78-72) with 1:40 showing on the second-half clock.  The Panthers misfired on their final seven attempts from the field as the Rams capitalized by holding a 6-2 scoring advantage over the final 65 seconds to preserve the win.

McDonald finished with a game-high 22 points (10-of-17 FG) to go with five rebounds before fouling out with 1:29 left in the contest.  Roland followed with 13 points (6-of-6 FT) as Michael Samuel totaled career highs of 12 points (4-of-6 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) and four assists off the bench. Ulysse added 11 points (4-of-5 FG) and seven rebounds.  Preston Powell nabbed four steals.

Graham poured in 20 points (6-of-13 FG) and grabbed six rebounds to pace Farmingdale State.  George Riefenstahl followed with 18 points (7-of-10 FG) and Monaghan chipped in 14.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor, 30 percent (6-of-20) from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, Farmingdale State connected on 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the floor, 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from 3-point range and 69.7 percent (23-of-33) from the free-throw line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 34-31, while the Rams scored 16 second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers held the edge in blocks (5-3), points in the paint (38-33) and fastbreak points (6-5).  Farmingdale State scored 30 points off 19 Panther miscues and led the way in assists (17-11), steals (15-6) and bench points (35-21).

SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE GRYPHONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues its five-game Skyline Conference road trip Tuesday (Jan. 30) against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (4-15, 3-11 Skyline) at 7 p.m. from Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, New York.
