Ulysse’s double-double leads @OW_Panthers Men's Basketball to series sweep at Sarah Lawrence

Old Westbury closes out its five-game Skyline Conference road trip Thursday (Feb. 1) at St. Joseph’s College (L.I.)

BRONXVILLE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball returned to .500 in the Skyline Conference standings Tuesday evening with a 57-48 road win over the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (4-16, 3-12 Skyline) from Campbell Sports Center in Bronxville, New York.  Since Sarah Lawrence joined the Skyline Conference in 2014-15, Old Westbury (8-11, 7-7 Skyline) has won all seven decisions.

Through the opening ten minutes of play, Old Westbury and Sarah Lawrence exchanged buckets until the Gryphons rattled off five-unanswered points including a Malin Segal 3-pointer to give hosts a narrow lead (11-10) with 10:54 showing on the first-half clock.  Moments later, the Panthers fought back as they put together a 9-2 run during a stretch of 2:48. Preston Powell opened up the spurt with a layup and was capped off by David Rodriguez's trey to give Old Westbury a seven-point cushion (26-19) with 5:19 remaining.  Sarah Lawrence would refuse to let up as they slashed Old Westbury's lead to three (28-25) on a Enike Anyia layup with only 2:27 left in the half.  Two late buckets by Brandon Thomson and Khalil Wilson gave the Panthers a 32-28 edge heading into the break.

The Gryphons came out of intermission with intensity as they scored eight-straight points in the opening 4:44 of second-half play to go up by two (36-34).  Powell broke the second-half scoring ice for the Panthers on a 3-pointer with 13:16 remaining.  The trey jump started a 12-2 run that featured a layup by Terrin Roland that gave the Panthers the advantage for good at 10:36.  During the spurt, Thomson knocked down four free throws, one of which would cap off the run with 9:46 left to give the Panthers a 44-38 lead.  Yancy Ulysse scored five-consecutive points that including a layup and a trio of free-throws to begin a 10-2 run.  The spurt included two free-throws by Alan McDonald and one from Powell to push Old Westbury's lead to 12 (56-44), their largest lead of the contest, and locked up the win with 3:01 left.

Powell finished with a game-high 14 points (5-of-10 FG, 2-of-4 3FG) to go with five rebounds in leading Old Westbury.  McDonald followed with 12 points (5-of-12 FG) and seven rebounds while Ulysse chipped in 10 points, 13 rebounds (game-high) and a career-best four steals to record his second-career double-double.  Roland nabbed three steals.

Segal paced Sarah Lawrence with 13 points and two steals while Anyia added 10 points (5-of-10 FG), 11 rebounds and two steals.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the floor, 21.1 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc and 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, Sarah Lawrence connected on 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor, 25 percent (6-of-24) from 3-point range and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from the free-throw line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 40-38, while scoring 13 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.  The Panthers netted 16 points off 24 Gryphons turnovers and held the edge in steals (10-7), points in the paint (28-18) and bench points (11-3).  Sarah Lawrence led the way in blocks (2-1) and assists (10-7).

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (L.I.) GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out its five-game Skyline Conference road trip Thursday (Feb. 1) against the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (4-13, 4-8 Skyline) at 7 p.m. from Danzi Center in Patchogue, New York.  The Panthers will look to sweep the season series from St. Joseph's for the first time since 2013-14.
