@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball sweeps season series from Purchase with 57-49 victory

Old Westbury returns to campus Thursday (Feb. 1) for a Skyline Conference showdown versus Mount Saint Mary College

PURCHASE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball captured a 57-49 Skyline Conference road win Tuesday evening to sweep the season series from the Purchase College Panthers (6-11, 4-9 Skyline) inside Purchase Gymnasium in Purchase, New York.  Since the start of the 2014-15 season, Old Westbury (16-2, 10-2 Skyline) has won all eight head-to-head matchups versus Purchase.

Both teams traded leads in the early goings before Old Westbury scored six-straight points to go up 9-7 with 5:04 left in the opening quarter.  Purchase answered with a 5-0 run before Old Westbury countered with a 6-0 spurt as Tyra Bellings' 3-pointer at 2:25 helped the visitors take the lead for good (13-12).  Monique Joseph capped a 12-0 run by dropping in back-to-back layups to push Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 13 points (27-14) with 5:35 remaining in the second quarter.  Purchase scored the final-four points of the half to head into intermission down by nine (29-20).  

Playing from behind for the final 32:25, Purchase outscored Old Westbury by one (29-28) in the final half.  Purchase twice made it a six-point game in the third quarter and pulled within four (42-38) with 6:38 showing on the fourth period clock.  Old Westbury built an 11-point lead (51-40) as Charlotte Renker scored six points to key a 9-2 run from 5:57 to 3:14.  Trailing 55-44 with 46 seconds left, Purchase scored five of the game's final-seven points to settle the 57-49 decision.

Renker finished with 15 points (5-of-9 FG, 5-of-6 FT), 12 rebounds, six blocks (game-high) and two steals to register her 10th double-double of the season (21st-career) in leading Old Westbury.  Joseph followed nine points, seven assists (game-high), six rebounds and three steals (game-high).  Destiny Marino chipped in nine points and five assists.  Paige Jelinek totaled eight points and eight boards while Davida Warren rejected two shots to help Old Westbury tie a season-best effort with 11.  

Kayla Ortiz led the way with a game-high 21 points to pace Purchase while Amber Jones contributed 14.  Nyasia Harris grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 30.4 percent (21-of-69) from the floor, 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (10-of-20) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, Purchase connected on 28.3 percent (17-of-60) from the floor, 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the free-throw line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 61-41, while scoring 14 second-chance points off 26 offensive rebounds.  Purchase scored 20 points off 22 Old Westbury turnovers.  Both teams were even in steals (8-8) while Old Westbury held the edge in assists (21-12), blocks (11-3), points in the paint (32-20) and bench points (13-5).

MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to campus Thursday (Jan. 25) for a Skyline Conference showdown versus the first-place Mount Saint Mary College Knights (14-5, 11-1 Skyline) at 7 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers will look to avenge a 62-51 (Box Score) road loss on January 3 versus Mount Saint Mary.
