@OW_Panthers Men's Basketball sweeps season series from St. Joseph's (L.I.) with 85-70 road win

Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Feb. 3) for a Skyline Conference showdown versus Purchase College

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball captured an 85-70 Skyline Conference road win Thursday evening over the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (14-6, 11-2 Skyline) from Danzi Center in Patchogue, New York.  Old Westbury (9-11, 8-7 Skyline) sweeps the season series from St. Joseph's for the first time since 2013-14 in addition to defeating the Golden Eagles on the road for the first time since January 29, 2014.  

After falling behind by four (6-2) early on, Preston Powell knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers followed by Brandon Thomson's trey at 16:52 to give Old Westbury an 11-8 lead.  Old Westbury capped its 14-4 run 1:07 later with Alan McDonald's three-point play to make it a 16-10 game.  The Panthers later went on a 14-2 scoring spree to build its advantage to 15 (40-25) with 4:02 remaining in the half.  St. Joseph's outscored Old Westbury 5-2 over the final 2:53 to trail 42-30 at the break.    

St. Joseph's sliced its deficit to single digits (42-34) 35 seconds into second-half play before the Panthers rattled off eight-straight points to take a 16-point lead (50-34) with 15:38 remaining.  Playing with the lead for the final 36:52, Old Westbury grew its advantage to a game-high 23 points (70-37) off Yancy Ulysse's 3-pointer with 7:39 remaining to cap off an 11-2 run.  St. Joseph's chipped away in the final minutes to get as close as 13 points (83-70) with 24 seconds left.   
 
Powell led the way with a career-high 24 points (10-of-14 FG, 4-of-6 3FG) to go along with three steals for Old Westbury.  McDonald followed with 14 points while David Rodriguez contributed 12 points off the bench.  Ulysse chipped in 11 points (5-of-9 FG), eight rebounds and two blocks as Thomson swiped a game-high three steals for the Panthers.
 
Eddie Higgins finished with 12 points and six rebounds to pace St. Joseph's.  Frank Basile contributed 11 points (4-of-8 FG) while Jarred Marrow scored 10 points (4-of-7 FG).  Stephen Cohen dished out game-high five assists.
 
In the end, Old Westbury hit on 56.4 percent (31-of-55) from the floor, 60 percent (12-of-20) from beyond the arc and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, St. Joseph's connected on 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor, 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from 3-point range and 70 percent (7-of-10) from the free-throw line.  St. Joseph's won the boards battle, 32-30, while scoring 11 second-chance points off 10 offensive rebounds.  St. Joseph's also held the advantage in blocks (3-2), assists (15-13), and bench points (28-25).  Old Westbury scored nine points off 15 Golden Eagle turnovers and held the edge in points in the paint (36-34) and fastbreak points (18-8).  Both teams finished even in steals (8-8).
 
PURCHASE COLLEGE PANTHERS UP NEXT FOR OLD WESTBURY: Old Westbury returns home Saturday (Feb. 3) for a Skyline Conference showdown at 1 p.m. versus the Purchase College Panthers inside Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury looks to avenge their 81-65 road setback earlier this season.
