Second-half push gives @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball Skyline win at USMMA

Old Westbury returns home Wednesday (Jan. 10) for a Skyline Conference showdown versus Mount Saint Mary College

KINGS POINT, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday afternoon with a 79-71 Skyline Conference road win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (5-5, 3-3 Skyline) from Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, New York.

USMMA used an 11-0 spurt from 15:33 to 12:45 to build a 13-point lead (19-6).  Old Westbury (4-7, 3-3 Skyline) answered with a Julieon Boney 3-pointer that sparked an 11-2 run capped by Brandon Thomson's triple at 10:22 to pull the Panthers within four (21-17).  Old Westbury took its first lead of the game late in the first half as David Rodriguez's 3-pointer with 54 seconds left made it a 34-33 game.  Khalil Wilson's free throw capped Old Westbury's 13-4 run to add to the brief lead before James Walsh converted a 3-point play with one second remaining in the half to give USMMA a 36-35 lead heading into intermission.

The Mariners capitalized off Old Westbury's slow start out of the second-half gates by building a game-high 16 point lead (56-40) with 12:31 left off a 20-5 run that opened the period.  Thomson answered by scoring five-straight points to close out a 16-4 Panther run that sliced Old Westbury's deficit to four (60-56) with 6:28 remaining.  Trailing 66-61, Old Westbury pulled off the come-from-behind win with a 15-5 run over the final 4:31.  Boney sparked the charge with a 3-pointer at 4:31.  Alan McDonald's layup with 3:26 left gave Old Westbury its first lead since late in the first half.  Yancy Ulysse later dropped in a layup with 1:06 remaining to give Old Westbury a 72-66 lead.

McDonald finished with 16 points (6-of-9 FG) and seven rebounds to lead the Panthers.  Boney (5-of-9 FG, 3-of-5 3FG) followed with 13 points and three blocks.  Thomson added 12 points (2-of-4 3FG, 6-of-6 FT) while Ulysse contributed 12 points (6-of-7 FG), eight rebounds and two blocks to the win.  

Walsh scored 15 points (6-of-12 FG) to pace USMMA.  Seth Barnes chipped in 12 points while Eric Sobocinski and Robbie Kennedy followed with 11 points and 10, respectively.

In the end, Old Westbury connected on 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field, 32.1 percent (9-of-28) from 3-point range and 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, USMMA hit on 40.6 percent (28-of-69) from the floor, 25 percent (7-of-28) from beyond the arc and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the charity stripe.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 52-32, while scoring 15 second-chance points off 16 offensive rebounds. The Mariners converted 16 Panther turnovers into 18 points.  Old Westbury led the way in blocks (6-5) and bench points (38-22) while USMMA held the edge in assists (15-10), steals (7-5), fastbreak points (6-4) and points in the paint (42-30).
