@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball moves into playoff hunt with Maritime win

Old Westbury returns to action October 24 for its non-conference finale at New Jersey City University

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball traveled Sunday morning to Patchogue, New York for a Skyline Conference tri-match hosted by the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles inside Danzi Center.  The Golden Eagles (14-10, 3-1 Skyline) claimed the opener in three sets (25-8, 25-8, 25-18) before Old Westbury (5-14, 4-4 Skyline) swept (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) the Maritime College Privateers (5-4, 2-3 Skyline).  Looking to make a push for its first postseason appearance since 2011, Old Westbury now sits in sole possession of sixth place in the Skyline standings with just two league games left.

Old Westbury struggled to hit just -.164 as St. Joseph's attacked at a rate of .304 in the opener.  The Panthers won the battle of blocks, 3-1, while the Golden Eagles held the advantage in kills (33-8), aces (17-4), assists (32-8) and digs (32-22).

Kyraleigh Zinnel led the way for Old Westbury with five points from four kills and one ace.  Kristin Grieshaber followed with two aces and Joelle Desrosiers tallied 1.5 blocks.  

In the opening stanza, the Golden Eagles hit .478 with 14 kills to set the tone.  Danielle Senecal served eight of the team's 17 aces while Kriste Bohenblusch had a game-high nine kills.

Against Maritime, Old Westbury hit .148 in the opening set and finished the match swinging at  a .067 clip. Maritime attacked at just a rate of -.065 as the Panthers held the advantage in kills (29-16), aces (16-7), assists (26-13) and digs (46-37).  The Privateers outplayed Old Westbury in blocks, 3-2.

The Panthers put together 11 kills in the first set to pave the way for their third sweep of the season.  Zinnel scored a match-leading 14 points by contributing 11 assists, eight kills, eight digs and six aces to her stat line.  Desrosiers contributed seven kills and had a .636 hitting percentage while Daesha Garrison scooped 13 digs.    

For the Privateers, Celyna Custodio had a team-high six kills and Erika Kirchner compiled 11 assists.  

NEW JERSEY CITY UNIVERSITY GOTHIC KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out its non-conference slate on October 24 at 7 p.m. against the New Jersey City University Gothic Knights (8-14) at John J. Moore Athletic Center in Jersey City, New Jersey.  The Panthers hold a 2-4 record against the Gothic Knights dating back to 2007.
