Late second-half push helps @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball to season-opening win at Pacific Lutheran

Old Westbury returns to action Saturday (Nov. 17) at the Doug McArthur Classic against University of Puget Sound

TACOMA, WA --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball opened the 2018-19 season by capturing an 82-74 non-conference road triumph against the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes (0-1) Friday evening from Tacoma, Washington inside Olsen Gymnasium.  The Panthers (1-0) tipped off the campaign with a win for the second-straight season.

Justin Alleyne-Washington's layup started a 9-2 run to give Old Westbury the early five-point lead (9-4) with 16:51 remaining in the opening stanza.  Leighton Kingma knocked down a three pointer for Pacific Lutheran to fire back with a 16-3 offensive outburst in a span of seven minutes (16:32-9:32) to make it a 20-12 game.  At 9:11, the Panthers responded with a 27-10 run to regain the lead to extend the contest to a game-high nine points (39-30) with 1:43 left.  The Lutes scored five-unanswered points in the final 1:21 to pull within four points (39-35) at intermission.

After four lead changes in the opening 2:50 of second-half play, Pacific Lutheran took its largest lead of the game with a 10-3 run from 16:40 to 13:52 to build a seven-point cushion (55-48).  Old Westbury battled to erase the seven-point deficit over the next four minutes and pulled within one (63-62) after Alleyne-Washington buried a free throw at 8:44.  Alleyne-Washington's jumper gave the Panthers a brief one-point lead (69-68) at 3:57 before a Jordan Thomas free throw knotted the game at 69 for the Lutes with 3:14 showing on the second-half clock.  Old Westbury regained the lead for good as a triple by Inderpal Dhaliwal ignited a 13-5 run over the remaining 2:58 to settle the 82-74 final.

Alan McDonald tied his career high as he recorded 23 points (9-of-14 FG, 5-of-8 FT) to go with seven rebounds (five offensive) and two steals.  Alleyne-Washington and Pedro Marquez each scored 15 points in their Old Westbury debut.  Mike Snowden cleaned up the glass and came down with a team-high 10 rebounds.

Kingma finished with game highs of 24 points (7-of 13 FG, 6-of-6 FT) and five blocks to go along with eight rebounds to pace Pacific Lutheran.  Conor Geiger chipped in 16 points (6-of-10 FG, 4-of-5 3FG) while Thomas grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 41.9 percent (31-of-74) from the field, 24.2 percent (8-of-33) from three-point range and 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the free-throw line while holding the Lutes to 42.2 percent (27-of-64) from the floor, 38.7 percent (12-of-31) from deep and 80 percent (8-of-10) from the charity stripe.  The Panthers owned a +10 (48-38) rebounding margin while outplaying Pacific Lutheran in steals (9-4). The Lutes led the way in blocks (7-5) and assists (19-17).  Old Westbury also scored 24 second-chance points off 20 offensive rebounds.
