Strong second half propels @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball past Purchase, 78-66

Old Westbury remains on campus Tuesday (Feb. 6) for a Skyline Conference showdown against Yeshiva University

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball outscored the visiting Purchase College Panthers (13-7, 9-6 Skyline) by nine (44-35) in the second half to run away with a 78-66 Skyline Conference home win Saturday afternoon inside Clark Athletic Center.  Old Westbury (10-11, 9-7 Skyline) has now won five of its last six games versus Purchase.  

Both teams combined for five lead changes and five ties in a fast-paced opening half.  After Purchase used a 6-0 run to break an 11-all tie, Old Westbury answered with seven-straight points capped by Michael Samuel's layup at 10:16 to take its first lead of the game, 18-17.  Purchase quickly regained the lead and played ahead for a stretch of 5:37 of play with a pair of 6-0 runs.  Alan McDonald threw down a dunk with 3:21 left to give Old Westbury the lead (29-28) for the remainder of the half before David Rodriguez's 3-pointer with 1:56 remaining sent the hosts into intermission with a 34-31 advantage.  

Yancy Ulysse scored five-straight points to push Old Westbury to a 39-34 lead 1:42 into second-half play.  Brandon Thomson's 3-pointer at 16:47 sparked Old Westbury's 9-0 run (16:47 to 13:57) that built the lead to 12 (50-38).  Purchase answered with eight-straight points as Nikeem Deleon opened the spurt with six tallies to trim the deficit to four (52-48) with 11:24 left.  Old Westbury countered with a 14-4 run from 10:29 to 7:31 as Rodriguez's three-point play closed out the scoring spree to make it a 66-52 game.  Playing with the lead for the final 24:08, Preston Powell's triple extended Old Westbury's advantage to a game-high 16 points (70-54) with 5:41 showing on the second-half clock.  Trailing 71-55, Purchase outscored Old Westbury by four (11-7) over the final 4:16 to settle the 78-66 decision.  

McDonald's 22 points led a pack of five double-digit scorers for Old Westbury while pulling down eight rebounds.  Powell finished with 17 points (6-of-11 FG, 3-of-5 3FG) as Terrin Roland chipped in 11 points, four steals and a game-high seven assists.  Ulysse hauled in a team-best 11 rebounds.

For Purchase, two starters recorded double-doubles, including Deshawn Cann, who dropped 22 points and 13 rebounds, while Tarik Allicock totaled 10 points and 12 rebounds.
  
In the end, Old Westbury hit on 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor, 50 percent (8-of-16) from beyond the arc and 77.4 percent (24-of-31) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, Purchase connected on 32.8 percent (21-of-64) from the floor, 16.7 percent (5-of-30) from 3-point range and 63.3 percent (19-of-30) from the free-throw line.  Purchase won the boards battle, 46-44, while scoring 18 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury scored 13 points off 13 Purchase turnovers and held the edge in assists (15-10), bench points (13-2), points in the paint (26-24) and fastbreak points (16-7).  Purchase outplayed Old Westbury in blocks (8-3) and steals (8-7).  
 
YESHIVA UNIVERSITY MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains on campus Tuesday (Feb. 6) for a Skyline Conference showdown at 6 p.m. versus the Yeshiva University Maccabees inside Clark Athletic Center.  Dating back to the 2001-02 season, Old Westbury has won all 15 regular-season home matchups against Yeshiva.
