OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball closed out regular-season Saturday afternoon with a 72-68 Skyline Conference Senior Day win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (9-15, 7-13 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center. Old Westbury (12-13, 11-9 Skyline) has claimed victory in all three games versus the Mariners since they returned to the Skyline Conference in 2016-17. The Panthers will play as the No. 6 seed in next week's Skyline Conference Championship starting Tuesday (Feb. 20) with first-round action on the road against the third-seeded College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Prior to tip-off, seniors Preston Powell (2014-18), Terrin Roland (2016-18), Michael Samuel(2016-18) and Khalil Wilson (2016-18) were honored for their dedication to the program.

USMMA opened the scoring with five-straight points before Preston Powell answered with five of Old Westbury's seven points to grab a 7-5 lead with 16:12 remaining. Following a Powell 3-pointer that tied the game at 12, the Mariners put together a 10-2 run for a stretch of 5:10 to take a 22-14 lead. After misfiring on six-straight attempts from the field, Old Westbury cut its deficit to four (22-18) with back-to-back layups by Powell and David Rodriguez. USMMA build its lead to 13 points twice in the final 1:40 to take a 38-26 advantage into intermission.

Trailing 40-27, Old Westbury used a 14-4 run capped by Alan McDonald's layup to pull within three points (44-41) with 11:55 left in the game. McDonald scored four points over the next 1:17 to trim USMMA's lead to one (46-45). Terrin Roland's 3-pointer at 9:08 closed out a 21-8 Panther run to knot the game at 48. Powell drained a 3-pointer 4:21 later to give the Panthers the lead (55-54) for the first time since 13:34 in the first half. After trailing for a span of 28:47, Old Westbury outscored USMMA by six points (20-14) over the final 4:47 to secure the four-point win. Old Westbury went up by 11 points (67-56) with 1:59 remaining before the Mariners put together a 12-3 run in less than 60 seconds to trail 70-68 with 18 ticks left. Free throws by Brandon Thomson and Yancy Ulysse cemented the 72-68 final.

Powell poured in a game-high 19 points (5-of-15 3FG) and nabbed three steals. McDonald scored 13 points of his 15 points in the second half while Roland finished with 13 points, seven assists (game-high), five rebounds and two steals. Ulysse grabbed a team-leading nine rebounds to go with two blocks and two steals off the bench. Thomson added seven points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Christian Wittendorf's 13 points led three other double-digit scorers for USMMA. David Washington pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds to go along with five steals (game-high), five assists and two blocks.
