@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball tops Farmingdale State to advance to third-straight Skyline title game

No. 2 Old Westbury travels to top seeded Mount Saint Mary College for a crack at its second Skyline Conference Championship in three years

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- 
(www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball outscored the third-seeded Farmingdale State College Rams (15-12) by 11 points in the second half to advance to their third-straight Skyline Conference Championship game with a 60-48 home win Thursday evening inside Clark Athletic Center.  No. 2 Old Westbury (22-3) had lost its previous two postseason matchups versus Farmingdale State dating back to 2005.  

The Panthers travel Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon to Newburgh, New York for the title game against the top-seeded Mount Saint Mary College Knights (21-5) at 1 p.m. inside Kaplan Center.  Mount Saint Mary swept the regular-season series by handing the Panthers two out of their three losses on the year (January 3, Click here for Box Score / February 1, Click here for Box Score).  The Panthers have lost its last two road games to the Knights and are winless in postseason head-to-head matchups versus Mount Saint Mary during the Skyline Conference era.

Farmingdale State broke the scoring ice 51 seconds in with a Liz Durchhalter 3-pointer followed by Old Westbury's trio of layups to grab a 6-3 advantage.  In an opening stanza that featured five lead changes, the Rams answered with five-straight points to go up 12-8.  Old Westbury countered with six-unanswered points over the final 2:14 to lead 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.  Farmingdale State took back the lead (18-16) early in the second period with five-consecutive points from Kaelyn Ward.  Trailing for a stretch of 5:04, Old Westbury pulled ahead (22-21) off Paige Jelinek's layup with 2:14 remaining.  The Panthers held on to the lead to take a 23-22 advantage into intermission.   

Tied at 27, Bridgid McNeill scored five of Old Westbury's eight points during an 8-0 run to open an eight-point lead with 4:55 left in the third quarter.  Old Westbury outscored Farmingdale State by five (21-16) in the stanza to lead 44-38 through 30 minutes of action.  Both teams played even to start the fourth quarter until Charlotte Renker's layup capped an 8-0 spurt to stretch Old Westbury's lead to 12 (52-40).  Playing ahead for the final 22:14, Old Westbury extended its lead to a game-high 14 points (56-42) with 2:28 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.  

Renker led the way with game highs of 16 points, 22 rebounds (tied career-high) and three blocks to record her 15th double-double of the season (26th career).  Tori Bellings followed with 14 points and a game-high five assists.  McNeill chipped in with 12 points, 10 rebounds (five offensive) and three steals to register her third double-double of the season (seventh career) while Monique Joseph added 10 rebounds and three steals.

Durchhalter finished with a team-high of 12 points to pace Farmingdale State.  Ward contributed 11 points and five steals while Alexis Antonacci and Essence Casey both scored 10 points apiece.  Khandra Rhoden nabbed five steals.

In the end, Old Westbury hit on 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor, 10 percent (1-of-10) from beyond the arc and 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from the charity stripe.  By comparison, Farmingdale State connected on 23.9 percent (17-of-71) from the floor, 19.4 percent (7-of-36) from 3-point range and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from the free-throw line.  Old Westbury won the boards battle, 73-33, while scoring 22 second-chance points off 26 offensive rebounds.  Farmingdale State scored 18 points off 30 Panther turnovers and held the edge in steals (15-9).  Old Westbury led the way in assists (10-9), blocks (6-2), points in the paint (34-16) and bench scoring (7-1).  Both teams were even in fastbreak points (4-4).
