@OW_Panthers Baseball opens Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic play against NYU

Old Westbury continues play Sunday (Mar. 18) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against St. Lawrence University

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped a non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon with 19-10 and 9-8 setbacks to the New York University Violets (12-0) to open play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic from Terry Park Sports Complex No. 1 in Fort Myers, Florida.

Game 1 (7 Inn): NYU 19, Old Westbury 10
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the first inning with a pair of runs off NYU starter Cam Serapilio-Frank.  Jesse Russo (5-for-5, 4 R, 2 2B, SB) singled to right field before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.  Two batters later, Russo scored as John Fogarty (2-for-5, 5 RBI, 2 2B) reached on a fielder's choice to put the Panthers ahead.  Peter Capel then drove in Liam Slattery (1-for-1, 2 R, RBI, BB) with a sacrifice fly to double Old Westbury's advantage, 2-0.

NYU responded in the second inning with three runs on four hits off Panther starter Adam Heidenfelder (L, 2-1; 4 IP, 8 H, 11 ER, 4 BB, 3 K).

Trailing 7-2, Fogarty stroked a two-run double off Aaron Ackerman to score Russo and Slattery in the third inning.

Fogarty struck again in the fourth with a two-out RBI double to cap a two-run inning to pull the Panthers within one, 7-6.

NYU put the game away in the fifth with nine runs on five hits, one error, two walks and three hit batsman to make it a 16-6 game.

Old Westbury scored twice in both the fifth and seventh innings to settle the 19-10 final.

Russo tied a career high with five hits and four runs scored while Mike Manetta (3-for-4, R, 3B) collected three hits.

Sal Cammisuli (W, 3-0; 2.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER) closed out the game with two innings of work to earn NYU's win.

Game 2 (7 Inn): NYU 9, Old Westbury 8
NYU jumped ahead early with four runs through two innings on Panther starter Joe Sarni (ND, 4 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 5 BB, 3 K).  Sarni settled down to toss two scoreless innings before reliever Jason Espinal fanned three batters to blank NYU in the fifth.

Fogarty (3-for-4, RBI, R) put Old Westbury on the board with a two-out RBI single on NYU starter Tim Salvadore (ND, 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 3 BB, K) that scored Russo (1-for-4, 2 R, 3B, BB) to make it a 4-1 game in the third inning.

The Panthers continued their timely hitting in the fifth as John Condon (2-for-2, 2 RBI, BB) delivered a two-out double to advance Slattery and Fogarty across home plate to cut the deficit to one, 4-3.

Old Westbury used a big sixth inning to take a five-run lead (8-3).  Shaun Kaminski started the scoring with a single to drive in Tyler Roberts and Manetta.  Slattery then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score David Hawley before Capel slapped a two-run single four batters later to double Old Westbury's advantage, 8-4.

NYU made it a one-run game (8-7) in the sixth by scoring three runs on reliever Dom Kriegel.

Ryan Dunbar (L, 0-1, 0.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 3 BB) was saddled with the loss after surrendering back-to-back singles and three walks during the seventh inning.  Scott Hilbrandt was handed a bases loaded walk that allowed Jonathan Iaione to score the game-winning run.

Matthew Millus (W, 1-0, 2 H, 2 R, 2 BB) fanned four batters in two innings to claim NYU's win.

ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY SAINTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (3-2-1) continues play Sunday (Mar. 18) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against the St. Lawrence University Saints (0-1) with a 9 a.m. doubleheader from Lee County Player Development Complex No. 5.
