@OW_Panthers Softball remains perfect with John Jay home-opening sweep

Old Westbury opens Skyline Conference play on Sunday (Mar. 25) at St. Joseph’s College (L.I.)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball collected 12-4 and 17-2 non-conference wins over the John Jay College Bloodhounds (2-4) Tuesday afternoon to earn a home opening sweep from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury (4-0) has now won 15-straight games versus John Jay since 2007.

Game 1 (5 Inn.): Old Westbury 12, John Jay 4
After John Jay broke the scoring ice in the first inning with a Lisa Pellegrino RBI single off Panther starter Lauren Bloom, Old Westbury answered with back-to-back Amelia Cariddi (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) and Amanda Fucci (3-for-3, 5 RBI) two-out RBI doubles to take a 2-1 lead.

Bloom (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) helped out her own cause in the second frame with a two-out double to score Jessica Livingston (3-for-3, 2 R, RBI) and Otilia Bernal to go up 4-1.
Timely hitting led John Jay to tie the game in the third with a two-out rally to score three runs on four-straight hits.

Old Westbury put the game away with seven-straight hits leading to an eight-run fourth inning to build a 12-4 advantage.  Cariddi singled home Nicole Baron for what proved to be the game-winning run before Fucci launched a grand slam over the left field fence.  Livingston then slapped a RBI triple followed by Bernal's run-scoring single off Pellegrino (L, 1-2, 4 IP, 15 H, 12 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, K). Two batters later, Bernal scored off Pellegrino's throwing error.

Bloom (2-0) fired seven strikeouts while allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk to claim victory in a five inning complete-game effort.

Game 2 (5 inn.): Old Westbury 17, John Jay 2
Old Westbury continued its hot hitting by tallying 17-consecutive runs through the opening four innings.

Old Westbury scored four runs in the first inning keyed by a Samantha Arcese (2-for-4, HR, 5 RBI) double that platted home Bloom (2-for-2, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 BB) and Baron (1-for-2, 3 R, 3 RBI, 2B, SB).

After scoring once in the second inning, the Panthers put five on the board in the third.  Livingston's triple drove in one, Lauren London crushed a two-run home run and Bloom capped the frame with an inside the park round tripper to build a 10-run cushion.

The Panthers added seven more runs in the fourth highlighted by Baron's three-run double and Arcese's three-run big fly to push the lead to 17.

Baron (1-0), who fanned six batters (one walk) in five innings of work, gave up a run-scoring single and double in the fifth inning to John Jay that settled the 17-2 run-rule final.
