@OW_Panthers Softball opens Skyline play at St. Joseph’s (L.I.)

Old Westbury returns home Tuesday (Apr. 3) to face Hunter College

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury softball came up short on Saturday afternoon by dropping 6-5 and 13-7 Skyline Conference opening decisions on the road to the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (6-6, 2-0 Skyline) from St. Joseph's Outdoor Athletic Complex in Patchogue, New York.  Old Westbury (4-2, 0-2 Skyline) has now lost its last 11 games versus St. Joseph's dating back to 2013.

Game 1 (9 Inn.): St. Joseph's (L.I.) 6, Old Westbury 5
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice in the opening inning with a Samantha Arcese two-out single off Golden Eagle starter Theresa Cardello (W, 4-2, 9 IP, 12 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 14 K) to drive in Amelia Cariddi (2-for-3, RBI, BB) for the early 1-0 advantage.

St. Joseph's knotted the game (1-1) in the bottom of the first with Cardello's RBI single off Panther starter Lauren Bloom (ND, 8 IP, 15 H, 5 R, 4 ER, BB, 3 K).

Bloom (2-for-5, 2 R, 2-2B, BB) then helped her cause in the second with RBI double to score Nicole Baron for the 2-1 advantage.

With the game tied at three in the sixth inning, Cariddi's RBI single gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead before Bloom stretched scoring on an error by second baseman Elise Grau to stretch the advantage to two (5-3).

The Golden Eagles had last licks and used a two-run single by Grau to send a 5-5 game into extras (5-5).

Panther reliever Amanda Fucci (L, 1-1, 0.2 IP, H, R) surrendered a leadoff double to Lyndsay Smocer (3-for-4, 2 R, BB) in the ninth inning.  Two batters later, Grau lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Smocer for the game-winning run.

Arcese (4-for-5, RBI) produced a career-high four hits to lead Old Westbury.

Game 2: St. Joseph's (L.I.) 13, Old Westbury 7
Old Westbury broke the scoring ice with a two-out rally to score three runs off Golden Eagle starter Ashley Blydenburgh (W, 3-2; 7 IP, 11 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 2 BB, 6 K) in the opening frame.  Fucci (3-for-4, 3 R) slapped a two-out RBI double to left field to score Cariddi.  Arcese (2-for-4, R) singled through the left side to reach base before an Amanda Neenan single along, with an error by second baseman Grau, drove home Fucci and Arcese to make it a 3-0 game.

St. Joseph's responded with two runs in the fourth inning off Panther starter Nicole Baron (L, 1-1; 6 IP, 14 H, 13 R, 4 ER, BB, 2 K).  Smocer doubled to right center before rounding home off Ashley Accardi's single to left field. Grau followed with a two-out RBI double to score Accardi to pull the Golden Eagles within one, 3-2.

Old Westbury extended its lead to four by putting three on the board in the fifth inning.  Jessica Livingston (3-for-4, 2 RBI) smacked a three-run double to center field that drove in Bloom, Fucci and Neenan for Old Westbury's 6-2 lead.

St. Joseph's tallied 11 runs in the sixth inning to help secure the sweep.  With two outs, Arbiter drilled a two-run single up the middle that scored Franzelyn Russo for what proved to be the game-winning run, 8-6.  The Golden Eagles tacked on five additional insurance runs in the frame.

Livingston settled the 13-7 final in the seventh by scoring Fucci on a two-out RBI single to score Fucci.

HUNTER COLLEGE HAWKS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns home Tuesday (Apr. 3) with a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against the Hunter College Hawks (3-7) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  The Panthers have lost five-straight games to Hunter dating back to the 2013 season.
