@OW_Panthers Baseball wins Skyline Conference opener at Purchase

Old Westbury remains on the road Wednesday (Mar. 28) for a non-conference tilt at Vassar College

PURCHASE, NY ---Ā (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com)Ā SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened their 2018 Skyline Conference schedule Sunday afternoon with a 5-4 victory in 10 innings before falling 5-0 in the finale on the road against the Purchase College Panthers (11-7, 3-3 Skyline) from Purchase College Field in Purchase, New York. Ā Old Westbury (7-5-1, 1-1 Skyline) had a 10-game winning streak (2013-16) versus Purchase snapped last year after dropping the 2017 season series at home.

Game 1 (10 Inn.): Old Westbury 5, Purchase 4
Old Westbury starter Joe Sarni (ND, 7 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, BB, 3 K) gave up two runs (one earned) on two hits in the opening frame for Purchase to jump ahead, 2-0.

John Fogarty (1-for-4, 2 R, BB) answered in the third inning with a RBI triple to plate home Jesse Russo before scoring off John Condon's run-scoring single off Purchase starter Jonathon Deacon (ND, 7 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K) to tie the game.

Purchase went up 3-2 in the fifth with a Gregory Walsh inside the ballpark home run off Sarni. Ā The hosts doubled their advantage in the eighth with a Matthew Villalobos (2-for-4) RBI double for the 4-2 lead. Ā 

Faced with zero outs and the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Purchase reliever Lorenzo Lagares (L, 0-1, 2 IP, H, R, BB, 2 K) allowed Mike Manetta (3-for-5, SB) to score on a fielder's choice. Ā Liam Slattery then lifted a sacrifice fly out to center field to score Tom Macri to send a 4-4 game into extra innings.Ā 

Joshua Cruz (W, 1-0) was called on to escape out of Old Westbury's bases loaded jam with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Ā He answered the call by retiring back-to-back batters as the game moved to the tenth frame.

With runners on first and second, Manetta drilled a two-out single up the middle off Lagares to score Fogarty for the game-winning run. Ā Ā Ā 

Cruz fired two strikeouts and sat down all five batters faced to work a perfect 1.2 innings for his first-career win. Ā 

Game 2 (7 Inn.): Purchase 5, Old Westbury 0
Old Westbury starter Vinny Negri (L, 1-2, 4 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 BB, 3 K) allowed a leadoff triple to Walsh (2-for-3, 2 RBI) before Dylan Flynn (1-for-2, RBI, R, BB) stroked a sacrifice fly to center field to take the early 1-0 lead in the opening inning.

Purchase added solo runs in the third and fourth frames as Walsh produced a RBI single to make it a 3-0 game in the fourth inning. Ā 

After retiring three batters in the fifth, Old Westbury reliever Matt Bohenek surrendered two runs in the sixth inning to settle the 5-0 final. Ā 

Purchase starter Brian Cunningham put together a solid outing by scattering six hits while striking out three and walking four to improve to 4-0 on the season with the complete game shutout. Ā

Fogarty and Condon both went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Old Westbury. Ā With a single in the second inning, Dom Kriegel (1-for-2) has now hit safely in all eight games played to open his career. Ā 

VASSAR COLLEGE BREWERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains on the road Wednesday (Mar. 28) for a non-conference showdown with the Vassar College Brewers (2-5) from Prentiss Field in Poughkeepsie, New York. Ā The Panthers claimed victory in their 2016 matchup in Poughkeepsie.
