@OW_Panthers Baseball jumps ahead early to down Stevens, 8-5

Old Westbury remains at home Saturday (Apr. 14) for a Skyline Conference doubleheader versus St. Joseph’s College (L.I.)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball was fueled by scoring runs in five-straight innings Wednesday evening to earn an 8-5 non-conference home win over the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks (16-13) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Old Westbury (10-12-1) is now 2-2 at home against Stevens since 2010. 

Old Westbury jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning by hitting a trio of singles in the frame off Stevens starter Andrew Hamel (L, 0-2: 2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, BB, K).  Michael Borsch (3-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 BB) drove in Mike Manetta and Peter Capel (3-for-5, 3 R) with a single to open the scoring before Liam Slattery (3-for-4, 3 RBI) singled home Shaun Kaminski two batters later to make it a three-run game.  

Stevens earned a walk and a hit batsman in the third inning to set up Alex Detweiler's RBI single on Panther starter Ryan Dunbar (W, 2-2: 5.2 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 2 K).

The Ducks replaced Hamel in the third Michael Frissora, who allowed a RBI single to Borsch in the third for the 4-1 lead.  

Jesse Russo led off the fourth with a single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games before scoring on Slattery's single.

Slattery worked a bases loaded two-out walk off reliever William Korosec that advanced Capel home in the fifth for the game-winning run as the Panthers built a 6-1 lead.  

Stevens made it a two-run game (6-4) in the sixth with a two-run triple by Charles Kwong and a Matt Branco RBI single to end Dunbar's day.  

Old Westbury took a 7-4 lead in the sixth as John Condon scored on a dropped failed pickoff attempt by first baseman Shaye Bartnick.

The Ducks pulled within two runs in the seventh with a Patrick Rood RBI single off reliever Dom Kriegel.

Timely hitting saw Borsch collect a two-out RBI single in the eighth to extend Old Westbury's lead to three (8-5).  

Joshua Cruz fanned two batters in a scoreless ninth inning to nail down his fifth save of the season.  

ST. JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (L.I.) GOLDEN EAGLES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home Saturday (Apr. 14) for a 12 p.m. Skyline Conference doubleheader versus the St. Joseph's College (L.I.) Golden Eagles (12-9, 7-1 Skyline) from Jackie Robinson Athletic Complex.  Since 2011, Old Westbury is 13-6 against St. Joseph's.
