@OW_Panthers Baseball collides with Mount Saint Mary in Skyline battle

Old Westbury continues Skyline Conference play Friday (Apr. 6) at United States Merchant Marine Academy

PATCHOGUE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball dropped 8-4 and 16-8 Skyline Conference decisions Thursday against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (9-5, 4-0 Skyline) in Skyline Conference action from Gregg Alfano Field in Patchogue, New York. Old Westbury (7-9-1, 1-3 Skyline) entered the day with a 5-1 regular-season record versus Mount Saint Mary since 2015.

Game 1: Mount Saint Mary 8, Old Westbury 4
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the second inning by capitalizing on a fielding error by third baseman Dom Kriegel.  Mount Saint Mary singled twice before the error loaded the bases. Two batters later, Kevin Edgar's ground out scored Knight starter Blake Keenan for the game's initial run.

Mount Saint Mary doubled its advantage in the third by scoring another unearned run off Panther starter Vinny Negri (1-2, 6 IP, 4 R, 2 ER, 6 H, 2 BB, 5 K).  Nick Rizzo, who reached on a fielding error by shortstop Mike Manetta, stole second and third before scoring off John Santana's double-play ball.

Old Westbury answered in the third to slice the deficit in half.  Manetta led off with double and scored two batters later on a David Hawley ground out.

Blake Keenan (3-0) helped his own cause in the sixth inning by lifting a two-run homer over the right field fence to build a 4-1 lead.

Mount Saint Mary added two runs off reliever Matt Bohenek in the seventh to go up 6-1.

Old Westbury pulled within three runs (6-3) in the eighth as Jesse Russo's two-out triple scored Dean Sheridan and Kriegel.

After Mount Saint Mary scored two in the ninth, Old Westbury worked a bases loaded walk to advance Nic Labiento home to settle the 8-4 final.

Game 2: Mount Saint Mary 16, Old Westbury 8
Old Westbury faced 15 Mount Saint Mary batters in the opening frame to fall behind 9-0 on five hits and four errors.  Panther starter Joe Sarni (L, 0-1) recorded one out and was charged with eight runs (four earned) on four hits and two walks.

The Panthers replied in the bottom of the first with RBI singles by John Condon and Tyler Roberts before Peter Capel drilled a two-run double to make it a 9-4 game on Knight starter Ryan Hayes (W, 3-1, 10 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 9 K).  Shaun Kaminski (2-for-4) then doubled home Capel before scoring on a throwing error to slice the deficit to three (9-6).

Trailing 15-6 in the sixth inning, Capel (2-for-3, 4 RBI, 2 R) cracked a two-run homer over the right field fence for Old Westbury's first big fly of the season.

UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY MARINERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury continues Skyline Conference play Friday (Apr. 6) on the road against the United State Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (18-2, 5-1 Skyline) at 1 p.m. from Roosevelt Field in Kings Point, New York.  The Panthers are 4-3 against the Mariners dating back to the 2012 campaign.
