@OW_Panthers Baseball concludes season with 11th-straight Skyline Conference Championship appearance

NEWBURGH, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) No. 6 SUNY Old Westbury baseball charged late but were unable to push past a 9-8 Skyline Conference Championship first-round decision to the third-seeded Mount Saint Mary Knights (22-10-1) Wednesday afternoon from MSMC Baseball Complex in Newburgh, New York.  Despite advancing to Skyline Conference Championship play for the 11th-consecutive year, Old Westbury (19-16-1) concludes its season with a first-round exit to Mount Saint Mary for the second-straight season. The Knights advance to the double-elimination round hosted by Farmingdale State College Friday at 3 p.m. against No. 2 St. Joseph's College (L.I.).    

Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening inning by producing four-straight singles off Panther starter Steven Tellerias (ND, 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 BB, 2 K).  

With two outs and the bases loaded in the second inning, reliever Matt Bohenek (L, 2-1: 1.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R,  3 BB, K) was called on to take over for Tellerias. The Knights built a four-run advantage by scoring off Bohenek's wild pitch.  

Old Westbury answered with four-straight singles off starter Ryan Hayes (ND, 3 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 K) as part of a four-run third inning.  David Hawley (2-for-3, R, 2 BB) opened the scoring with a RBI single before Jesse Russo (2-for-3, 3 RBI, R) hit a two-run single. Russo scored two batters later off John Fogarty's single to tie the game.  

Mount Saint Mary broke the tie with a Kevin Edgar (3-for-5, 4 RBI) three-run double to make it a 7-4 game in the fourth inning.

In the fifth inning, Mike Manetta slapped a two-out RBI triple down the right field line off reliever Christian Spano (W, 4-1: 4 IP, 2 H, 3 R, ER, 4 BB, 3 K) to score Liam Slattery to pull Old Westbury within two runs (7-5).

Edgar helped extend the lead to three runs (8-5) in the sixth with a RBI single off reliever Alipio Tiburcio.  

The Panthers used a two-out rally to trim the deficit to one run (8-7) off reliever Michael DiGiovanni  in the eighth inning. Hawley singled up the middle to round home Manetta from second base. Russo followed with a RBI single to score Dean Sheridan.

The Knights scored in the bottom of the frame as a passed ball by catcher Michael Borsch advanced Blake Keenan (3-for-3, 3 R) home for the the game-winning run off reliever Joshua Cruz (3 IP, 3H, 1 R, 0 ER, K).

Old Westbury's comeback attempt fell short in the ninth.  Reliever Alexander Maher allowed a single and three walks before Nick Zestanakis retired Hawley on a fly out to strand the bases loaded to secure his second save of the season.  John Condon used a one-out single to reach base for the 18th-straight game. Four batters later, pinch hitter Dom Kriegel worked a bases loaded walk to score Condon to settle the 9-8 final.    

The Panthers graduate a six-member senior class consisting of David Hawley, Christian Ramkissoon, Tyler Roberts, Jesse Russo, Dean Sheridan and Liam Slattery.
