@OW_Panthers Women’s Volleyball serves season-best 20 aces at Staten Island

Old Westbury remains on the road Thursday (Sept. 20) for a non-conference matchup with Pratt Institute

STATEN ISLAND --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's volleyball traveled Saturday afternoon to Staten Island for a non-conference tri-match hosted by the College of Staten Island Dolphins inside The Tank.  The Panthers (1-7) dropped a four-set decision (25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 19-25) to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (6-1) in the opener before falling in four (25-12, 21-25, 21-25, 19-25) to the Dolphins (6-4).  

Old Westbury had its best set in third by hitting .296 before finishing the match at .181.  Brooklyn hit .196 and held the edge in kills (47-37), aces (15-8) and assists (43-32) while Old Westbury outplayed the Bulldogs in blocks (5-1) and digs (71-55).  The Panthers move to 6-3 against Brooklyn since 2008.

Kyraleigh Zinnel led Old Westbury with three aces, nine kills, 14 assists, 15 digs and two block assists to post her eighth-career double-double.  Kristin Grieshaber also had her eighth-career double-double by following with 14 assists and 11 digs.  Joelle Desrosiers hit a match-best .467 with eight kills and two blocks while Daesha Garrison and Danielle Corsi totaled seven kills apiece.  Sofia Goris scooped 17 digs to lead the defensive charge.

Double-doubles by Michaela Appel (16 kills, 10 digs) and Ezri Shor (21 assists and 11 kills) paced Brooklyn while Kate Meltsin and Yana Shaposhnikova both served four aces.

Against Staten Island, Old Westbury opened with its best hitting set with a .143 percentage leading to a 13-point win.  The Panthers finished the match with a .057 hitting percentage while topping Staten Island in aces (20-13), digs (69-56) and blocks (5-4).  Staten Island hit .090 on its way to holding the edge in kills (37-33) and assists (31-30).  Old Westbury is now 8-5 against the Dolphins since 2002.

Zinnel served a season-best 11 aces to go along with 15 digs and 13 assists for her first-career triple-double.  The 11 aces were the most for a Panther since October 17, 2015, when Rayn Brown had 16 versus Sarah Lawrence College.  Grieshaber added 14 assists, 13 digs, eight kills, two aces and one block to her statline.  Shanayia Lloyd chipped in with seven kills and three aces.  Desrosiers added three aces, Corsi had five kills and three blocks (two solo) while Goris tallied 16 digs.

Margaret O'Malley-Rebovich had a match-high 13 kills as Arianna Spears 27 assists captained the Dolphins to victory.  Francesca Castellano sparked the Dolphins with seven kills, four aces and 14 digs.

PRATT INSTITUTE CANNONEERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury heads to Brooklyn for a non-conference matchup with the Pratt Institute Cannoners (3-5) on Thursday (Sept. 20) at 7 p.m. from Pratt ARC.  The Panthers are 1-1 against the Cannoneers since 2005.
