@OW_Panthers Men’s Soccer shuts down Mitchell, 2-0

Old Westbury closes its three-game homestand on Saturday (Sept. 22) against Farmingdale State College in a Skyline Conference opener

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer claimed a 2-0 non-conference home victory over the Mitchell College Mariners (2-3-0) Wednesday afternoon from Panther Park.  With the win, Old Westbury(3-4-0) has now beaten Mitchell in back-to-back seasons.

Edens Avril rebounded his initial blocked shot four seconds earlier before netting home his first-career game-winning goal past Mariner goalie Seth Strader (2-3-0) to give Old Westbury the early 1-0 advantage in the fifth minute.  Panther goalie Mike Warren (3-4-0) was threatened with three Mariner shots and made two saves in the opening period.

Avril concluded his scoring in the 87th minute as he capitalized from being fouled in the box and buried his second-career penalty kick goal to settle the 2-0 final.

Warren faced five shots to claim his first complete game shutout on the season for the Panthers while Strader made eight saves for Mitchell in defeat.

Old Westbury held the advantage in shots (23-5), shots on goal (10-2) and corner kicks (4-0).

FARMINGDALE STATE COLLEGE RAMS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes its three-game homestand on Saturday (Sept. 22) against the Farmingdale State College Rams (3-3-0, 0-0-0 Skyline) in a Skyline Conference opener at 12 p.m. from Panther Park.
