@OW_Panthers Men’s Soccer set for home opener after Kean showdown

Old Westbury is back in action Thursday (Sept. 6) for its home opener against Lasell College

UNION, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer was unable to overcome an early goal Tuesday evening as the Panthers dropped a highly contested 1-0 final to the Kean University Cougars (2-0-0) in non-conference action from Alumni Field in Union, New Jersey.  Old Westbury (0-3-0) starts the season with three-straight losses for the first time since 2015.

Edens Avril fired high 7:59 in to test Cougar goalie Derek Phells (2-0-0) with the first shot of the game.

In the 16th minute, Felipe Lucas buried the game-winning goal past Panther goalie Mike Warren (0-3-0) off a great cross from Danny Guillen to give Kean a 1-0 lead.  Lucas put up five shots in the first half, three of which landed on target.

Phells made a huge save on Nick Gino in the 38th minute, stopping a Panther run off a free kick feed from Eric Ragogna to keep the lead 1-0 in favor of the Cougars.

After putting up four attempts in the opening stanza, Old Westbury turned up the pressure in the second half with seven shots.  Avril, who accounted for three of those attempts in the final 45 minutes, tied a career high with five shots and three on goal to lead Old Westbury.

Despite keeping the Cougars off the board for the final 74:06, Kean finished with the advantage in shots (23-11), shots on goal (6-4) and corner kicks (7-2).

Warren turned away five shots in defeat for Old Westbury as Phells made four stops to secure the clean sheet.

LASELL COLLEGE LASERS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to campus Thursday (Sept. 6) for its home opener against the Lasell College Lasers (0-1-1) at 4 p.m. in non-conference action from Panther Park.
