@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball tops Maritime for Skyline home win

Old Westbury remains at home Tuesday (Jan. 22) for a showdown against defending Skyline champions Yeshiva University

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball outplayed the Maritime College Privateers (3-14, 2-10 Skyline) in the second half Saturday afternoon to come away with a 71-62 Skyline Conference home win inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers (10-6, 8-3 Skyline) have swept the season series from Maritime after splitting a year ago.

Trailing by three at 13:30, Andrew Buskey nailed a three-pointer to ignite an 8-0 Panther run to give Old Westbury an 18-13 lead at the 12:07 mark.  Old Westbury went up by as many as six points in the first half before Maritime outscored the Panthers 9-2 over the final 4:15 to take a 31-30 advantage intermission.

Maritime picked up right where it left off to grab a 41-34 lead just 3:32 in to second-half play.  Moments later, Old Westbury scored 14-unanswered points starting with Alan McDonald's layup at 13:31 en route to building a seven-point cushion (54-47).  Old Westbury played with the lead for the final 10:43 and after Maritime pulled within three (57-54),  Pedro Marquez landed a three-pointer to cap a 7-0 spurt to extend Old Westbury's lead to a game-high 10 points (64-54) with 1:57 remaining.

McDonald led all scorers with 24 points to go along with nine rebounds.  Marquez followed with 21 points (6-of-12 FG, 4-of-8 3FG, 5-of-5 FT), six rebounds, five assists and three steals.  Justin Alleyne-Washington chipped in 16 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks to post his seventh-career double-double in the win.

Brendan McGovern finished with 19 points to pace Maritime.  Brennan Whelen contributed 14 points (6-of-11 FG), seven assists (game-high), six rebounds and two steals.  Alec Downes poured in 12 points (5-of-10 FG) off the bench while Michael Walker scored 10 points and pulled down eight rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field, 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from beyond the arc and 62.1 percent (18-of-29) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Maritime connected on 36.4 percent (24-of-66) from the floor, 29 percent (9-of-31) from three-point territory and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from the charity stripe.  Despite losing the boards battle by four (47-43), Old Westbury scored 15 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds. The Panthers also outplayed Maritime in assists (13-12), blocks (3-0), steals (6-3) and fastbreak points (14-4) while scoring 11 points off 14 Privateer miscues.  Maritime held the edge in bench points (16-4) while both teams drew even in points in the paint (28-28).

YESHIVA UNIVERSITY MACCABEES UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains at home Tuesday (Jan. 22) to take on the defending Skyline Conference champions Yeshiva University Maccabees (9-5, 7-2 Skyline) at 6 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers will look to repay Yeshiva after having their 15-game regular-season home winning streak snapped last year.
