@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball battles defending Skyline champs Yeshiva

Old Westbury travels Saturday (Jan. 26) for a Skyline Conference showdown against Farmingdale State College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball had their four-game winning streak snapped Tuesday evening  after suffering a 76-48 setback at home to the defending Skyline Conference champions Yeshiva University Maccabees (10-5, 8-2 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers (10-7, 8-5 Skyline) move to 11-2 on campus against Yeshiva since 2008-09.

Old Westbury started slow to find itself in a 12-0 hole after misfiring on eight attempts from the field to open the contest. The Panthers then used a 9-2 run to pull within five at the 13:48 mark as Justin Alleyne-Washington contributed four points to the spurt.  Yeshiva regained a double-digit lead by scoring 10-unanswered points to go up 30-15 with 6:34 remaining in the half. Old Westbury outscored the Maccabees 14-6 over the final 6:16 to trail 36-29 at intermission.

The Maccabees played with a double-digit lead for the final 17:39 as they grew their advantage to 19 (56-37) at the midway point of the final stanza.  Old Westbury got as close at 14 (56-42) down the stretch before Yeshiva went on a 20-4 scoring spree during a span of 7:18 to take a game-high 30-point lead (76-46) with 1:07 showing on the second-half clock.

Pedro Marquez finished with 13 points (3-of-6 3FG) and two steals to pace Old Westbury.  Alan McDonald added 10 points and six rebounds while totaled nine points and two steals.

Gabriel Leifer led all scorers with 16 points (7-of-13 FG) to go along with 16 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals.  Simcha Halpert contributed 15 points (6-of-13 FG), five assists and two steals. Tal Gweta chipped in 14 points (6-of-8 FG) while Ryan Turell poured in 10 points and dished out five assists.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting a season-low 22.2 percent (16-of-72) from the field and 19.2 percent (5-of-26) from beyond the arc while draining 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the free-throw line.  Yeshiva connected on 53.3 percent (32-of-60) from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from three-point territory and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the charity stripe. Despite losing the boards battle, 48-36, Old Westbury scored eight second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds.  Yeshiva outplayed Old Westbury in assists (24-10), steals (9-7), bench points (14-8) and points in the paint (44-18). Old Westbury scored 21 points off 20 Maccabee miscues. Both teams were drew even in blocks (3-3) and fastbreak points (15-15)
