@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball rally late to top Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury travels Saturday (Jan. 5) for a Skyline Conference matchup against Sarah Lawrence College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball erased a five-point halftime deficit to open the 2019 year with a 79-72 Skyline Conference home win Thursday evening against the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (4-7, 3-3 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers (5-5, 3-2 Skyline) improve to 7-1 against Mount Saint Vincent at home since 2011-12. Prior to jump ball, Old Westbury head coach Bernard Tomlin was honored for capturing his 400th-career win this past Saturday (Dec. 29) at Lehman College.

Old Westbury jumped ahead early with a 3-2 advantage before the Dolphins outscored the Panthers 13-7 over a span of 3:24 to lead 15-10 with 12:48 showing on the first-half clock.  The Panthers regained four-point lead (22-18) with a 12-3 spurt at the 7:12 mark. Mount Saint Vincent then put together an 18-6 run over a stretch of 5:40 to go up 36-28 with 1:28 remaining in the half.  Old Westbury answered with five-straight points before a Makai Johnson's free throw with 20 seconds left sent the Dolphins into intermission with a 38-33 advantage.

The Dolphins hit 5-of-9 from the floor to open the second half on an 11-5 run to extend their lead to a game-high 11 points (49-38) with 15:49 remaining.  Old Westbury pulled within five points (60-55) with 6:32 flashing on the clock as Andrew Buskey scored four of the team's eight points during an 8-2 spurt.  The Panthers continued to chip away and tied the game at 72 with a pair of Alan McDonald free throws at 1:46. McDonald then sank the back end on a trip to the line with 58 seconds left to give Old Westbury its first lead in 35:14 of play.  Old Westbury closed out the final 58 ticks with seven-unanswered points to earn the come-from-behind win.

Old Westbury was led by Justin Alleyne-Washington, who scored a career-high 30 points (8-of-16 FG, 4-of-10 3FG, 10-of-15 FT) to go with 10 rebounds, two steals and a block for his fourth double-double of the season.  McDonald finished with 16 points (8-of-10 FT) and two steals while Pedro Marquez followed with 10 points. Darale Young grabbed seven rebounds (five offensive) and dished out a team-best three assists off the bench.

Raquis Harris scored 23 points (8-of-14 FG, 5-of-8 3FG) to pace Mount Saint Vincent.  Jason Barrera (16 points), Vinny Travella (15 points) and Claudio Nmezi (10 points) all scored in double-figures.  

Old Westbury finished the night shooting 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the field, 27.6 percent (8-of-29) from three-point range and 75.8 percent (25-of-33) from the free-throw line.  The Dolphins knocked down 42 percent (29-of-69) from the floor, 28 percent (7-of-25) from long distance and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the charity stripe. Old Westbury scored 17 second-chance points off 18 offensive rebounds as the Dolphins won the battle of the boards, 45-44.  The Panthers also converted 16 Dolphins turnovers into 16 points while outplaying Mount Saint Vincent in fastbreak points (13-12). Both teams drew even in blocks (1-1) and the Dolphins held the edge in assists (17-9), steals (6-5), points in the paint (40-24) and bench scoring (29-11).

SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE GRYPHONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury travels Saturday (Jan. 5) to Bronxville, New York for a Skyline Conference matchup against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (7-5, 5-2 Skyline) at 1 p.m. inside Campbell Sports Center.   Since the Gryphons joined the Skyline Conference in 2014-15, the Panthers have won all seven decisions.
