@OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball outplays Sarah Lawrence for Skyline overtime win

Old Westbury travels Tuesday (Jan. 8) for a Skyline Conference battle at United States Merchant Marine Academy

BRONXVILLE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball went on a 10-3 scoring spree to prevail Saturday afternoon with an 88-81 Skyline Conference overtime road win against the Sarah Lawrence College Gryphons (7-6, 5-3 Skyline) inside Campbell Sports Center.  The Panthers (6-5, 4-2 Skyline) have now won all eight decisions against Sarah Lawrence since the Gryphons joined the Skyline Conference in 2014-15.

Justin Alleyne-Washington scored five points in 35 seconds to give Old Westbury an early 7-3 advantage 4:58 in.  Sarah Lawrence answered with an 11-4 run that included back-to-back triples from Andrew Varoli to go up by three (14-11) with 12:44 left in the half.  Down 25-20, Old Westbury hit 7-of-8 from the free-throw line capped by Alan McDonald's pair to go back up 27-25 with 8:18 remaining. The Gryphons scored 12 of the games next 14 points to build their lead to eight (37-29) at the 3:06 mark.  McDonald scored four-unanswered points in the final 35 seconds as part of Old Westbury's 10-2 rally to tie the game at 39 heading into intermission.

Both teams played it close in the early goings of the second half until Alleyne-Washington's three-pointer ignited Old Westbury's 9-2 spurt to build a 48-43 lead.  Sarah Lawrence responded with a 10-3 run as Enike Anyia contributed six points to give the Gryphons a 53-51 edge with 11:48 showing on the clock. Alleyne-Washington knocked down back-to-back triples in a span of 24 seconds to give Old Westbury a 57-53 advantage.  The game hit a stalemate from 7:29 to 5:05 prior to Gabriel Eng's free throw breaking the drought for Sarah Lawrence's slim 61-60 lead. With the game tied at 69 with 54 seconds left, Anyia's free throw put Sarah Lawrence ahead by one. Old Westbury stormed down the court as Shakirro Samuels drained a timely three-pointer 20 seconds later for a 72-70 lead.  The Gryphons tied the game with a pair of free throws before regaining possession before Allenye-Washington misfired on a runner. Sarah Lawrence's attempt by Omar Jamaleddine from half court was blocked by Jaison Robinson to send a 72-all tie to overtime.

Locked at 78, Darale Young's layup put Old Westbury up with 91 seconds left.  Alleyne-Washington increased the advantage to four before Pedro Marquez closed out the 6-0 run with a pair of free throws.  With 11 seconds remaining, Jamaleddine nailed a three-pointer to bring Sarah Lawrence within three (84-81). Marquez would then ice the game with four-unanswered points to settle the seven-point win.

McDonald poured in 13 of his 20 points (7-of-13 FG, 5-of-5 FT) in the first half and added seven rebounds before fouling out with 54 seconds left in regulation.  Alleyne-Washington scored 20 points (7-of-14, career-best 5-of-10 3FG) while Marquez tallied nine of his 16 points (5-of-12 FG, 4-of-6 FT) in overtime in addition to totaling six rebounds and two steals.  Chase Johnson added nine points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Anyia scored 15 of his game-high 30 points (8-of-14 FG, 14-of-20 FT) in the second half to go along with a game-leading 15 rebounds.  Jamaleddine finished with 14 points and seven rebounds while Varoli added 14 points (5-of-10 FG, 4-of-8 3FG) off the bench.

Old Westbury finished the afternoon shooting 42.9 percent (30-of-70) from the field, 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (18-of-26) from the free-throw line.  Sarah Lawrence connected on 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field, 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point territory and 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the charity stripe.
