Old Westbury opens a two-game Skyline Conference homestand starting Thursday (Jan. 10) against Mount Saint Mary College

KINGS POINT, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball rallied late but were unable to hold on to the lead Tuesday evening as the Panthers suffered a 58-55 Skyline Conference setback to the United State Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (3-7, 1-5 Skyline) inside Liebertz Gymnasium. The Panthers (6-6, 4-3 Skyline) had entered winners of all three matchups against USMMA since the Mariners rejoined the Skyline in 2016-17 season.

Trailing 4-0 to start the game, Old Westbury used a 10-4 run as Justin Alleyne-Washington nailed a three-pointer at 14:47 to give the Panthers their first lead of the night (10-8).  Moments later, Andrew Buskey connected from long distance to help Old Westbury go back up by one (21-20) at the 7:36 mark. USMMA then went on an 11-0 scoring spree to take a 10-point lead (31-21) before Pedro Marquez's jumper sent Old Westbury into the break down 31-23.

After failing to get to the free-throw line in the opening half, Alleyne-Washington converted one of two from the stripe with 15:35 left in the second period for Old Westbury's first attempts of the game.  The Mariners then stretched their lead to 11 (39-28) as Seth Barnes landed USMMA's second triple of the second period at 15:19.  Alan McDonald's layup at 14:02 chopped Old Westbury's deficit to eight (41-33) before USMMA extended its lead to a game-high 14 points (47-33) off back-to-back Blaine McDonough layups 2:11 later.  The Panthers made a late push with a 16-3 run as Marquez's three-pointer gave Old Westbury a 55-54 lead with 2:29 showing on the second-half clock.  With Old Westbury leading for the first time since 6:19 remaining in the first half, Conor Green put USMMA ahead for good (56-55) 29 seconds later with the game-winning jumper.  Old Westbury misfired on four-straight attempts from the field before Green made two free throws to settle USMMA's three-point win. Old Westbury had a chance to send the game into overtime, but were unable to convert as Marquez misfired from deep as time expired.

McDonald scored 10 of his 14 points (7-of-12 FG) in the second half and added five rebounds and two steals to his statline in leading Old Westbury.  Alleyne-Washington finished with 14 points and grabbed nine boards while Marquez added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Barnes scored 14 points (5-of-10 FG, 3-of-6 3FG) to pace USMMA.  Green followed with 12 points (4-of-8 FG, 4-of-5 FT) and three steals.  James Walsh poured in 10 points while McDonough grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field, 25 percent (7-of-28) from three-point territory and 50 percent (2-of-4) from the free-throw line.  USMMA connected on 43.6 percent (24-of-55) from the field, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the charity stripe. The Mariners won the boards battle, 40-35 and scored 13 second-chance points off 11 offensive rebounds.  USMMA outplayed Old Westbury in assists (12-9), bench points (16-8) and points in the paint (28-24). Old Westbury held the edge in fastbreak points (8-6) while scoring 15 points off 15 Mariner miscues. Both teams were drew even in blocks (1-1) and steals (7-7).

MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury opens a two-game Skyline homestand starting Thursday (Jan. 10) against the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (9-4, 6-2 Skyline) at 5 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center. The Panthers enter with a 3-2 home record against the Knights dating back to the 2012-13 campaign.
