@OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball charge late in Skyline battle at USMMA

Old Westbury returns home Thursday (Jan. 10) for a Skyline Conference showdown with Mount Saint Mary College

KINGS POINT, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball dropped a 49-43 Skyline Conference road decision to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (10-0, 6-0 Skyline) Tuesday evening inside Liebertz Gymnasium in Kings Point, New York.  The Panthers (11-2, 5-2 Skyline) are now 3-3 against the Mariners dating back to the 2010-11 season.

After a scoreless opening 1:51, USMMA scored four-straight points with 6:58 remaining.  Old Westbury responded with a Monique Joseph jumper that ignited a 9-2 run to take a brief three-point lead (9-6) with 2:48 left.  Julia Dahlke drained a three-pointer at 2:25 to kickstart an 8-2 Mariner spurt to close the first quarter with a 14-11 advantage.  With 4:30 showing on the second-quarter clock, Kiana Vega knocked down a jumper to push USMMA's lead to seven points (22-15) before Charlotte Renker scored back-to-back layups to trim Old Westbury's deficit to three (24-21) heading into the break.

Playing from behind for the final 31:20, Old Westbury allowed Lauren Hunter to score five-unanswered points to extend USMMA's lead to double-digits (34-24) with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter.  Trailing 48-35 with 3:53 remaining, Joseph scored seven of Old Westbury final 10 points to get as close as five (48-43) with a final surge before Vega's free throw settled the 49-43 final.

Joseph poured in 10 of her 14 points (6-of-13 FG, 2-of-4 FT) in the second half and added 13 rebounds and six steals to post her 19th-career double-double (fourth of season) before fouling out with 1:44 remaining in the fourth quarter.  Tori Bellings followed with 12 points (5-of-12 FG), four assists and three steals.  Renker chipped in 11 points (5-of-9 FG), 16 rebounds and three blocks to register her 38th-career double-double (10th of season).  Davida Warren and Cassandra Chery both swatted away three shots.

Hunter led all scorers with 21 points (9-of-15 FG, 3-of-5 FT) to go along with 12 rebounds and three steals to pace USMMA.  Kaleigh D'Arcy contributed 10 points, five rebounds and two steals as Shelby Peters pulled down 10 rebounds and nabbed three steals.

In the end, Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 32.1 percent (18-of-56) from the field, 25 percent (1-of-4) from three-point territory and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the free-throw line.  USMMA connected on 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the charity stripe.  The Panthers held a +14 rebound margin (51-37) while the Mariners scored 12 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds.  USMMA outplayed Old Westbury in assists (14-7), steals (14-11) and bench points (6-5) and while scoring 20 points off 26 Panther turnovers.  Old Westbury held the edge in blocks (9-6) and points in the paint (30-22) while both teams were even in fastbreak points (6-6).

MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE KNIGHTS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury returns to campus Thursday (Jan. 10) to open a two-game Skyline homestand starting with the Mount Saint Mary College Knights (10-4, 7-0 Skyline) at 7 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers enter with a 2-1 home record against Mount Saint Mary since the 2015-16 campaign.
