Gilligan shines as Men’s Soccer prevail past Farmingdale State in overtime

Old Westbury returns to campus Wednesday (Oct. 23) for a Skyline Conference showdown against Maritime College

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer claimed a big 2-1 double overtime Skyline Conference road victory over the Farmingdale State College Rams (8-8-0 5-3-0 Skyline) Saturday afternoon from Rams Field in Farmingdale, New York.  With the win and three games remaining in the regular season, Old Westbury (5-9-1, 3-5-0 Skyline) is now sitting in seventh place in the league standings.

After a costly foul in the box granted Farmingdale State a penalty kick 2:27 in, Daniel Mehryari converted on the opportunity to give the Rams the early 1-0 lead.  Old Westbury responded with the equalizer in the 65th minute as Brian Lopez put away Michael Gilligan's feed to register his third-career goal and send the 1-1 game into overtime.

The Panthers pressured Ram goalie Justin Silva (7-7-0) in the first overtime, but failed to convert on three shots that landed on target by Cristian Garay and Gilligan.  Old Westbury kept its foot on the gas in the 104th minute when Grixon Moreira set up Gilligan to bury his third-career game-winning goal to settle the 2-1 final.

James Perciballi (5-9-1) claimed victory for Old Westbury with six saves while Silva stopped seven shots in Farmingdale State's loss.

In the end, Old Westbury held the advantage in shots on goal (9-7) while Farmingdale State held the edge in corner kicks (7-5).  Both teams were even with 13 shots apiece.
