Critical second half sends Men’s Soccer to regular-season finale triumph at Purchase

Old Westbury makes its fourth-straight Skyline Conference Championship appearance Saturday (Nov. 2) with a first-round matchup

PURCHASE, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's soccer concluded the regular season Tuesday evening by claiming a critical 2-1 Skyline Conference road triumph against the Purchase College Panthers (7-10-1, 5-6-0 Skyline) from Purchase College Field in Purchase, New York. With the win, Old Westbury (7-9-2, 5-5-1 Skyline) are now 9-1-3 against Purchase since 2007.

Making its fourth-consecutive appearance in the Skyline Conference Championship, Old Westbury will play as the No. 5 seed and will face the fourth-seeded Farmingdale State College Rams (9-10-0, 6-5-0 Skyline) in Saturday's (Nov. 2) first-round action at 12 p.m. from Rams Field in Farmingdale, New York.

Purchase struck first at the 7:53 mark as Avery Stevenson and Juan Arboleda connected with Anthony Guzzone to slip the game's opening goal past Old Westbury goalie James Perciballi (7-9-2). Despite trailing 1-0, Old Westbury held a 10-9 shot advantage over Purchase heading into the break.

Cristian Garay sent a cross into the penalty area for Michael Gilligan to put the finishing touches on Old Westbury's equalizer in the 49th minute.  Then in the 74th minute, Grixon Moreira took a quick strike 25 yards out to put away his second-career game-winning goal past Purchase netminder Mario Olmedo (7-10-1) and settle the 2-1 final.

James Perciballi made four saves to secure the big win for Old Westbury as Olmedo sent away three shots in defeat for Purchase.

At the end of 90 minutes, Old Westbury led the way in shots (18-16) and shots on target (6-5) while Purchase finished with an 11-9 corner kick edge.
