Men’s Basketball opens season at Rose City Tip-Off Classic

Old Westbury remains on the road Sunday to take on The College of New Jersey at day two of the Rose City Tip-Off Classic

MADISON, N.J. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball tipped off the 2019-20 season Saturday evening in the Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Tip-Off Classic hosted by Drew University inside Baldwin Gymnasium in Madison, New Jersey.  Despite having four players score in double-digits, the Panthers' (0-1) suffered a 75-69 road setback to the Rangers (2-0).  Old Westbury will play The College of New Jersey Lions (1-1), who fell to the Hamilton College Continentals (1-0) later on in the evening by a final score of 88-81, in Sunday's consolation game at 1 p.m.  The Continentals will play the Rangers at 3 p.m. in the championship game.
 
Julieon Boney laid in two for Old Westbury 29 seconds into the opening half before Malachi Walker, Jr.'s triple kickstarted a brief 8-0 Drew run with 17:07 remaining.  A Pedro Marquez jumper ignited an 18-3 run during the span of 3:54 for the Panthers to regain and push the lead to a game-high nine points, 20-11.  The Rangers battled to trim the deficit over the next 9:34 and was able to pull within one point, 34-33, with 2:30 left courtesy of Michael Boice's layup. Old Westbury pushed its lead to four points off of Justin Alleyne-Washington's lay-in and a Jonathan Jamieson free throw before Lybrant Robinson dropped in two to send the 37-35 game into the break.
 
Old Westbury opened with an 8-2 run capped by two of Marquez's 11 second-half points to build an eight-point cushion (45-37) with 17:45 left.  Drew put together a 17-4 spurt in response from 17:33 to 12:28 to retake the lead for good, 54-49.  With 6:23 showing on the second-half clock, the Panthers got in close as one (61-60) coming off the hands of Andrew Buskey draining a three-pointer before the Rangers used a final 16-9 surge in the remaining 6:08 to settle the 75-69 final.
 
Marquez finished with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists to pace Old Westbury.  In their debut, Jamieson followed with 11 points (4-of-9 FG, 3-of-6 FT) and a game-high 13 rebounds to post his first-career double-double off the bench while Cameron Winston chipped in with 11 points. Alleyne-Washington poured in 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.  Pierrce Perry and Boney both pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. 
 
Collins led the way with a game-high 28 points (9-of-16 FG, 4-of-7 3FG, 6-of-9 FT) and four assists for Drew. Robinson contributed 12 points and game-high three steals while Walker, Jr. added 11 points, 11 rebounds and a game-high six blocks.  Boice scored 10 points off the bench.
 
In the end, Old Westbury shot 33.3 percent (27-of-81) from the field,  17.6 percent (6-of-34) from long range and 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from the free-throw line while Drew fired away at 39.7 percent (27-of-68) from the floor, 34.5 percent (10-of-29) from beyond the arc and 55.0 percent (11-of-20) from the charity stripe.  The Panthers finished with a +26 (67-41) rebounding margin while outplaying the Rangers in second-chance points (17-0), points off turnovers (13-8), bench scoring (20-13) points in the paint (40-32).  Drew held the advantage in assists (14-12), blocks (7-6) and steals (7-6).
