Men’s Basketball closes out play at Rose City Tip-Off Classic

Old Westbury remains on the road Friday (Nov. 22) for Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic hosted by Marywood University

MADISON, N.J. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball were unable to recover from an early deficit en route to an 84-69 non-conference loss to The College of New Jersey Lions (1-1) Sunday afternoon in the consolation game of the Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Tip-Off Classic hosted by Drew University inside Baldwin Gymnasium in Madison, New Jersey. With the loss, Old Westbury moves to 0-2 to start the season.
 
Cameron Winston averaged 13.5 points (87.5% FT), 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in two games to be recognized as a member of the all-tournament team.
 
Julieon Boney and Winston combined to score Old Westbury's opening 11 points 4:06 in for the 11-10 lead.  The College of New Jersey responded with eight-unanswered points capped by a layup by Ryan Jensen at the 14:26 mark to hold a seven-point lead, 18-11. The Panthers pulled in close as four (20-16) after Winston sank a free throw with 12:33 showing on the first-half clock.  With 8:40 remaining, Travis Jocelyn laid in two to ignite a 10-2 Lion run during a span of 4:22 to build the lead to 14 (39-25). At 4:00, Pedro Marquez headlined Old Westbury's 8-3 run by scoring five points to help trim the deficit to nine (42-33). The College of New Jersey scored five of the game's final seven points in the remaining 1:24 of the first half to push its lead back to double digits for good, 47-35, heading into the break.
 
The College of New Jersey opened the second-half scoring by erupting with an 11-3 to extend its lead to a game-high 20 points (58-38) with 16:23 left.  Marquez, Justin Alleyne-Washington and Winston put together Old Westbury's 15-6 spurt over the next 3:58 to trail by 11 (64-53). The Lions maintained its offensive intensity in the final 10:05 by outscoring the Panthers 20-15 to settle the 84-69 final.
 
Winston finished with career-best 16 points (5-of-6 FT) to go with four rebounds and three assists to pace Old Westbury.  Marquez followed with 14 points (5-of-11 FG, 2-of-2 FT) while Alleyne-Washington chipped in with 13 points (5-of-6 FT) and five rebounds.  Andrew Buskey added 12 points (4-of-7 FG, 3-of-6 3FG) off the bench. 
 
Randall Walko led the way with a game-high 24 points (9-of-14 FG, 4-of-9 3FG, 2-of-2 FT) to go along with six rebounds for The College of New Jersey. Jocelyn contributed 23 points (10-of-20 FG, 3-of-6 3FG) and nine rebounds (five offensive). PJ Ringel dished out a game-high seven assists and nabbed a game-best four steals.
 
In the end, Old Westbury shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field, 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from three-point range and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, The College of New Jersey hit on 45.8 percent (33-of-72) from the floor, 32.4 percent (11-of-34) from beyond the arc and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the charity stripe.  The College of New Jersey won the boards battle, 46-37, while scoring 22 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds. The Lions outplayed the Panthers in assists (20-11), steals (6-3) and points in the paint (44-16).  Old Westbury held the edge in blocks (3-0), bench points (21-18) and fastbreak points (12-10) while scoring 15 points off 13 Lion miscues.

Old Westbury travels to Scranton, Pennsylvania Friday (Nov. 22) for the Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic hosted by Marywood University. The Panthers play against the host Pacers at 6 p.m. inside Insalaco Arena.
