Quartet of double-digit scorers pace Men’s Basketball at Marywood

Old Westbury remains on the road Saturday (Nov. 23) to take on Stevenson University at day two of the Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic

SCRANTON, Pa. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball returned to action Friday evening in the Holiday Inn Express Electric City Classic hosted by Marywood University inside Insalaco Arena in Scranton, Pennsylvania.  The Panthers (0-3) were unable to overcome the final 10-2 run put together by the host Pacers (2-4) and suffered a heartbreaking 91-88 non-conference setback in overtime.  Old Westbury will play the Stevenson University Mustangs (3-2), who fell to the John Jay College Bloodhounds (2-1) later on in the evening by a final score of 73-63, in Saturday's consolation game at 2 p.m.  The Bloodhounds will play the Pacers at 4 p.m. in the championship game.

Adam Boussatta opened the game with a layup that ignited a 16-4 Marywood run in the opening 8:15. The Pacers grew its lead to a game-high 16 points, 26-10, off a pair of Boussatta free throws with 6:01 remaining.  Over the next 4:55, Old Westbury chipped away Marywood's double-digit lead using a 22-9 spurt headlined by Jonathan Jamieson's eight-first half points to make it a 35-32 game.  Donovan Catchings knocked down a triple with 30 seconds left before Pedro Marquez would hit two freebies for the Panthers to pull within four, 38-34, heading into the break.

Old Westbury battled to keep the game in single digits throughout the second half until Charles Wingate drained a jumper to knot the game at 70 with 4:26 remaining.  The Panthers claimed its first lead of the night (74-72) at the 3:05 mark courtesy of Jamieson's layup.  With 53 seconds left, a Marquez steal led to a Justin Alleyne-Washington jumper that gave Old Westbury the three-point cushion, 78-75.  Jack DeGroot responded by netting two free throws to trim Marywood's deficit to one before Marquez matched him with two freebies of his own with 10 seconds left in regulation.  In the final three seconds, DeGroot connected from deep to send the 80-all game into overtime.

Wingate drained a three-pointer nine seconds into the extra frame to kickstart a 6-1 Old Westbury run and claim the five-point lead, 86-81, with 4:01 left to play. Marywood put together a 10-2 run over the remaining 3:35 capped by Boussatta's two free throws to settle the 91-88 final.

Alleyne-Washington finished with season highs of 19 points (7-of-15 FG, 4-of-6 FT) and 12 rebounds to post his 10th-career double-double in leading Old Westbury.  He added two steals and two assists to his statline.  Marquez followed with season bests of 19 points (8-of-8 FT), nine assists and four steals. Cameron Winston chipped in 16 points (6-of-11 FG, 2-of-4 3FG, 2-of-2 FT) while Jamieson added a career-best 16 points (6-of-7 FG, 4-of-5 FT) to go along with five rebounds off the bench.  Pierrce Perry swatted away a personal-best four shots.

DeGroot led the way with a game-high 27 points (10-of-19 FG, 3-of-5 3FG, 4-of-5 FT) along with six rebounds to pace Marywood.  Boussatta contributed 18 points (6-of-7 FT) and seven rebounds while Catchings poured in 14 points (4-of-7 FG, 4-of-6 FT) and pulled down 10 rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the field, 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from three-point territory and 78.6 percent (22-of-28) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, Marywood connected on 47.2 percent (34-of-72) from the floor, 35.0 percent (7-of-20) from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the charity stripe. Marywood won the boards battle, 50-30, while scoring 23 points off 15 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury finished with the advantage in assists (24-20), steals (9-1), bench points (28-22), fastbreak points (19-7) and scored 12 points off 15 Pacer turnovers.  Marywood held the edge in blocks (6-4) and points in the paint (50-36).
