JAMAICA, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball fell 77-70 Tuesday evening to the York College Cardinals (3-5) in non-conference road action inside York College Gymnasium in Jamaica, New York. The setback moves Old Westbury to a 2-5 mark on the young season.
After a seesaw opening 10:43,
Jonathan Jamieson knocked down a triple at the 9:06 mark for Old Westbury to tie the game at 21. Olawele Kila responded with a three-pointer of his own to ignite a 13-0 run for York to take a game-high 13-point lead (34-21) with 6:48 remaining in the opening half. Old Westbury answered back with a much needed 16-6 spurt from 6:25 to 44 seconds, headlined by
Justin Alleyne-Washington's eight points, to send the 40-37 game into the break.
The Cardinals grew its lead to eight off a Donald Hartley Jr. three-pointer with 17:23 showing on the second-half clock. Alleyne-Washington sank a pair of free-throws to kickstart a 9-4 Panther run to get in as close as three, 53-50, with 14:12 remaining. York maintained its composure and pushed the advantage back up to double-digits (71-60) courtesy of Akil Vaughn's dunk at the 3:52 mark.
Pedro Marquez and Alleyne-Washington combined for seven-unanswered points over the next 57 seconds to slice the Panther deficit to four, 71-67, before York outscored Old Westbury 6-3 in the remaining 2:03 to settle the 77-70 final.
Marquez finished with 19 points (8-of-12 FG, 3-of-5 3FG) and two steals to pace Old Westbury. Alleyne-Washington followed with 18 points (7-of-18 FG, 4-of-5 FT), four rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block.
Pierrce Perry chipped in 13 points (6-of-9 FG) and 11 rebounds (eight offensive) to post his first-career double-double. He added a game-best four blocks and three steals to his statline while
Charles Wingate nabbed a game-high five steals.
Hartley, Jr. finished with 19 points (5-of-7 FG, 4-of-6 3FG, 5-of-5 FT) and three steals to lead York to victory. Devine Chisholm contributed 13 points (4-of-4 FT) and a game-high nine assists. Jaye Bookhart and Vaughn (10 rebounds) each poured in 11 points.
In the end, Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 38.7 percent (29-of-75) from the field, 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from beyond the arc and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from the free-throw line. York connected on 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field, 50 percent (8-of-16) from three-point territory and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the charity stripe. York won the boards battle, 42-40, while Old Westbury scored 17 second-chance points off 19 offensive rebounds. Old Westbury outplayed York in steals (16-6), blocks (6-2), points in the paint (40-38) while scoring 24 points off 27 Cardinal miscues. York held the edge in assists (19-10), fastbreak points (18-8) and bench points (14-7)
