OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball fell at home Friday evening to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs (6-3) by a final count of 73-58 in Toys For Tots non-conference action inside Clark Athletic Center. The Panthers move to a 4-6 mark to close out the 2019 calendar year.
Old Westbury took a 6-5 lead off
La'Niya Clark's layup with 5:07 remaining in the opening quarter. Dasha Goodman sank a pair of free-throws to ignite a 12-4 Brooklyn run from 4:47 to 1:21 to close out the quarter with the 17-10 lead. Brooklyn grew its lead to double-digits (23-12) off of Ericka James' two free-throws with 8:56 left in the second stanza. Old Westbury responded by putting together a 12-2 spurt the next 4:00, headlined by
Davida Warren's seven points, to pull within one (25-24). The Bulldogs then rallied to outscore the Panthers 10-6 in the remaining 4:07 to send the 35-30 game into the break.
Clark knocked down a triple at the 7:19 mark in the third-quarter for Old Westbury to get in as close as four-points, 37-33. Brooklyn turned up the offensive intensity over the next 5:45 with a 17-3 run to build the 18-point lead (54-36). With 6:22 showing on the fourth-quarter clock, Kayla Trembone connected from deep to extend the Bulldogs lead to a game-high 22 points (67-45). Warren scored six points that was part of Old Westbury's final 13-6 surge in the remaining 5:44 to settle the 73-58 final.
Warren finished with 16 points (4-of-8 FT), 14 rebounds (10 offensive) and two blocks to post her seventh double-double of the season (27th career) to pace Old Westbury.
Micah Browne followed with 13 points (4-of-9 FG, 5-of-6 FT) while
Ja'nya Flash chipped in 12 points (5-of-11 FG, 2-of-2 FT) and 11 rebounds (five offensive) to register his second-career double-double.
Chanel Jemmott led the way with 20 points (6-of-10 FT), 14 rebounds (eight offensive) and four steals to lead Brooklyn to victory. Taylor George contributed 14 points (5-of-12 FG, 3-of-4 FT) and game-high six steals. Kailyn Richburg added 10 points (4-of-6 FG) and two steals off the bench.
In the end, Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field, 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from beyond the arc and 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the free-throw line. Brooklyn connected on 34.2 percent (25-of-73) from the field, 16.7 percent (4-of-24) from three-point territory and 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the charity stripe. Brooklyn won the boards battle, 52-42, while scoring 16 second-chance points off 25 offensive rebounds. Brooklyn outplayed Old Westbury in assists (14-12), steals (18-7), points in the paint (40-38), fastbreak points (21-8), bench points (21-1) while scoring 22 points off 24 Panther miscues. Old Westbury held the edge in block (4-2).
