Old Westbury will close out the regular season Saturday (Feb. 16) with a Skyline Conference road tilt against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn)

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball used a 22-10 run down the stretch to come-from-behind for a 77-74 Skyline Conference  triumph over the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (8-15, 6-13 Skyline) Thursday evening inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers (14-10, 12-7 Skyline) are 4-1 against USMMA since the Mariners rejoined the Skyline Conference in 2016-17.

James Walsh drained three of his 13 first-half points six minutes in to spark a 9-0 Mariner run to go up 20-11 at the 11:02 mark.  Pedro Marquez then landed three-straight triples to pull the Panthers within two (22-20) with 9:44 remaining in the half. Trailing by eight, Chase Johnson and Andrew Buskey connected on back-to-back threes to ignite Old Westbury's 11-2 run.  Alan McDonald would cap the spurt with a three-point play to give the Panthers their first lead of the game, 34-33. The Mariners outscored Old Westbury 10-2 over the final 2:44 to lead 43-36 at the break.

After falling behind by 10 points with 7:03 showing on the second-half clock, Justin Alleyne-Washington sank a free throw with 2:04 left to give Old Westbury the lead for good (68-67).  Buskey had contributed a pair of threes during Old Westbury's 16-2 tear to go up 71-67 with 1:05 remaining. Alleyne-Washington would later extend Old Westbury's lead to a game-high six points off a pair of free throws.

Marquez poured in a career-best 31 points (10-of-17 FG, 9-of-15 3FG, 2-of-2 FT) to go with five assists to lead Old Westbury.  Alan McDonald scored 16 points (6-of-9 FG) while Alleyne-Washington followed with 13 points, six rebounds and two steals. Buskey chipped in nine points (3-of-4 3FG) off the bench and Johnson nabbed a game-high three steals.

Walsh finished with 22 points (7-of-11 FG, 4-of-6 3FG) and two steals to pace USMMA.  Jack Bucher contributed 16 points while Blaine McDonough scored 14 points (5-of-10 FG) and grabbed 10 rebounds.  David Washington pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

In the end, Old Westbury shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field, 51.9 percent (14-of-27) from three-point territory and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, USMMA connected on 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor, 47.4 percent (9-of-19) from beyond the arc and 81.3 percent (13-of-16) from the charity stripe. USMMA won the boards battle, 35-23, while Old Westbury scored 14 points off six offensive rebounds. Old Westbury led the way in assists (16-9), blocks (5-2), steals (9-5), bench points (9-8), fastbreak points (12-9) and scored 25 points off 16 Mariner turnovers.  USMMA held the edge in points in the paint (34-22).
