Old Westbury will play as the No. 3 seed in next week’s Skyline Conference Championship starting Wednesday (Feb. 20) with first-round action

BROOKLYN --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball played from behind before taking their first lead with 2:42 left and never looked back Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn to secure a 72-67 Skyline Conference win over the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (9-16, 7-13 Skyline) inside The Hill Center.  The Panthers (15-10, 13-7 Skyline) are now 7-2 against the Bears dating back to the 2015-16 campaign. Old Westbury will play as No. 3 seed in next week's Skyline Conference Championship starting Wednesday (Feb. 20) with first-round action. Championship seedings will be announced following Monday's Skyline finale game between Purchase College and Yeshiva University.  

Old Westbury misfired on seven attempts from the field prior to Alan McDonald's layup put the Panthers on the board 3:34 in.  Frank Reali then connected from deep 15 seconds later to build a 7-2 Bear lead. Old Westbury tied the game at 16 with a 9-4 spurt before a layup by Dimitri Sirakis at the 9:38 mark ignited a 20-5 Bear run.  Trailing by a game-high 15 points, Pedro Marquez scored four points of his 13 first-half points as part of a 9-1 tear over the final 2:49 to trim Old Westbury's deficit seven (37-30) at the break.

St. Joseph's pressured Old Westbury into making three turnovers early in the second half as the Bears scored seven-unanswered points to build a 14-point lead (44-30) with 18:31 remaining.  The Panthers went on a 13-4 scoring spree during a stretch of 5:48 to pull within five (50-45) with Marquez netting seven-straight points. Old Westbury continued to stay within striking distance and Justin Alleyne-Washington's layup sliced the deficit to one (62-61) with 3:36 showing on the second-half clock.  McDonald converted a three-point play 54 seconds later to give Old Westbury's its first lead of the day (63-62). Following a costly Sirakis miscue, Alleyne-Washington sank a three to make it a 67-62 game. After McDonald's free throw extended Old Westbury's lead to six (70-64), With nine seconds left, Sebastien Etheart hit a triple to bring the Bears within three.  Old Westbury put the game away with a pair of Marquez free throws in the closing seconds to complete the come-from-behind win.

Marquez led all scorers with 27 points (9-of-17 FG, 5-of-10 3FG, 4-of-6 FT) and nabbed a career-high six steals.  McDonald totaled 18 points while Alleyne-Washington chipped in with 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals. Andrew Buskey swatted away a career-best three shots as Stanley Baker rejected two.  

Sirakis finished with 20 points (9-of-18 FG) and 10 rebounds to pace St. Joseph's.  Kavan Meiner followed with 11 points (4-of-6 FG) and three blocks. Frank Reali and Stephane Etheart poured in 10 points each while Sebastien Etheart contributed game highs of 11 rebounds and seven assists to go along with four steals.

Old Westbury fired away at a rate of 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the field, 26.7 percent (8-of-30) from three-point territory and 60 percent (6-of-10) from the free-throw line.  The Bears connected on 44.8 percent (26-of-58) from the floor, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from beyond the arc and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the charity stripe. St. Joseph's won the boards battle, 42-38, while Old Westbury scored 14 points off 16 offensive rebounds.   Old Westbury outplayed St. Joseph's in blocks (7-5), steals (12-7), bench points (19-15) and while scoring 29 points off 19 Bear miscues. St. Joseph's held the edge in assists (15-7), fastbreak points (23-22) and points in the paint (54-52).
