Warren’s double-double leads @OW_Panthers Women’s Basketball’s charge against USMMA

Old Westbury travels to Brooklyn for its regular-season finale Saturday (Feb. 16) against St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in a critical Skyline Conference matchup

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's basketball had their eight-game winning streak snapped Thursday evening with a 63-58 Skyline Conference setback against the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (20-2, 16-1 Skyline) inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers (19-5, 12-5 Skyline) are now 2-4 against USMMA since the Mariners rejoined the Skyline Conference in 2016-17.

After trailing 19-6 with 9:03 remaining in the second quarter, Davida Warren's layup ignited an 11-2 spurt to trim Old Westbury's deficit to four (21-17).  USMMA outscored the Panthers 12-7 over the final 4:40 to push its lead to nine (33-24) heading into the half.

Tori Bellings knocked down a jumper 16 seconds into the third stanza to pull the Panthers within seven (33-26).  Kaleigh D'Arcy and Taylor Hightower combined for nine-straight points to extend USMMA's lead to a game-high 16 points (42-26) with 5:23 remaining.  Warren and Monique Joseph both scored four points during a 12-3 scoring spree to slice Old Westbury's deficit to seven (45-38) with 1:04 remaining in the third.  Trailing by 15 with just under five minutes to go in regulation, the Panthers went on a 16-6 tear led by Warren's six points to settle the five-point setback.

Warren led all scorers with 25 points (10-of-17 FG, 5-of-8 FT) and 17 rebounds (12 offensive) to register her 14th double-double of the season (18th-career double-double).  Charlotte Renker pulled down 18 rebounds while Joseph and Bellings nabbed four steals apiece.

D'Arcy totaled 17 points to pace USMMA.  Hightower followed with 12 points (6-of-11 FG), eight rebounds, five blocks (game high) and four steals.  Julia Dahlke chipped in 11 points while Lauren Hunter and Kiana Vega each scored 10 points. Shelby Peters added 10 rebounds.

Old Westbury finished the evening shooting 30.1 percent (22-of-73) from the field, 0-of-7 from three-point range and 63.6 percent (14-of-22) from the free-throw line.  By comparison, USMMA connected on 37.5 percent (24-of-64) from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from beyond the arc and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe. The Panthers won the boards battle, 59-37, scoring 32 second-chance points off 35 offensive rebounds. USMMA owned the advantage in assists (14-9), blocks (11-3), steals (12-11), bench points (12-3), fastbreak points (6-1) and scored 20 points off 22 Panther miscues.  Old Westbury held a 40-26 scoring edge in the paint.

JOSEPH'S COLLEGE (BROOKLYN) BEARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out the regular season Saturday (Feb. 16) in Brooklyn with a Skyline Conference matchup against the St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) Bears (16-8, 12-5 Skyline) at 1 p.m. inside The Hill Center. The Panthers are 7-1 against the Bears since the 2015-16 season.
