HOBOKEN, NJ --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball opened the 2019 season Monday afternoon in Hoboken, New Jersey with a 3-2 loss to the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks (1-1) in non-conference action from Dobbelaar Field. The Panthers (0-1) have opened the season against Stevens three times since 2016, with the Ducks holding a 3-0 mark.

Stevens started the scoring in the first inning with an infield groundout that scored A.J. Falconite for the game's initial run off Panther starter Christian Tessitore (L, 0-1: 2 IP, H, ER, 3 BB, 3 K).

Shaun Kaminski broke Old Westbury into the hit column in the second inning with a two-out single to center field off Ducks starter Roy Iversen (W, 1-0: 6.2 IP, 2 ER, BB, 5 K).

The Ducks doubled their advantage in the third with J.C. Hanley's two-out RBI single off Panther reliever Brandon O'Brien (3 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K).

Old Westbury threatened in the fourth with runners at first and second, but Iversen got Drew Robertson to swing and miss on strike three to strand two.

The Panthers sliced their deficit in half in the sixth inning with a Peter Capel run-scoring single to drive in Brandon Wilson from second base.

After falling behind 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Michael Borsch singled in the seventh to set the table for Sean Paprocki, who delivered a RBI double to pull Old Westbury within one run.

Joseph Dietz (2.1 IP, BB, K) allowed just one baserunner in a seven-out save to preserve Iversen's win.

Old Westbury finished with a 6-5 advantage in hits and batted 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position to strand six runners on the day. The Panthers got six innings out of their bullpen with Joe Sarni recording three out and fanning three batters before Matt Bohenek fired two hitless frames. Both teams committed three errors.

KEAN UNIVERSITY COUGARS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury remains on the road Friday (Feb. 22) when they take the field at 2 p.m. in Union, New Jersey against the Kean University Cougars (3-0) in a non-conference matchup from Jim Hynes '63 Stadium. The Panthers are 3-0 against the Cougars dating back to the 2016 campaign.
