Marquez leads @OW_Panthers Men’s Basketball in crucial Skyline matchup at Mount Saint Vincent

Old Westbury looks to close out its home slate Tuesday (Feb. 12) with a Skyline Conference tilt against United States Merchant Marine Academy

RIVERDALE, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury men's basketball fell short Saturday afternoon in Riverdale, New York with a 56-53 Skyline Conference setback on the road to the College of Mount Saint Vincent Dolphins (7-16, 6-12 Skyline) inside Peter Jay Sharp Center.  The Panthers (13-10, 11-7 Skyline) move to 10-5 against the Dolphins since the 2012-13 season.

After a scoreless opening 2:57 of play, Vinny Tavella's triple put Mount Saint Vincent on the board for the 3-0 lead.  Old Westbury then scored 10 of the game's next-14 points ignited by Stanley Baker's layup to claim a 10-7 lead.  Kalos Evans' three-pointer started a 10-0 Mount Saint Vincent spurt to build a 17-10 advantage with 9:28 remaining.  Old Westbury responded with seven-straight points to knot the game at 17 with 4:30 left.  Raiquis Harris scored the Dolphins' final-five points to go up 24-21 before Chase Johnson drained a jumper to pull Old Westbury within one (24-23) heading into the break.

After seeing a seesaw battle for a good portion of the second half, Old Westbury jumped in front as Pedro Marquez connected from downtown to make it a 51-49 game at the 3:38 mark.  Tavella buried one from deep to give the Dolphins a 54-51 advantage with 1:35 left. With 43 seconds left, Justin Alleyne-Washington came away with a key steal that led to Marquez's fastbreak layup four seconds later to trim the deficit to one (54-53).  Marquez would then produce a steal before Alleyne-Washington committed a costly turnover in the closing seconds to squander a golden opportunity as Jason Barrera's layup with one tick left sealed the 56-53 final.

Marquez stuffed the box score with 14 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and four assists to notch his first-career double-double to pace the Panthers.  Alan McDonald used 10 points and 10 rebounds to compile his ninth-career double-double while Alleyne-Washington added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Barrera totaled game highs of 15 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Dolphins.  Harris followed with 13 points while Tavella and Evans both scored 11.

In the end, the Panthers shot 29.7 percent (22-of-74) from the field, 21.4 percent (6-of-28) from three-point territory and 50 percent (3-of-6) from the free-throw line.  The Dolphins connected on 30.7 percent (23-of-75) from the floor, 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc and 50 percent (4-of-8) from the charity stripe.  The Dolphins won the boards battle, 57-47, scoring 18 second-chance points off 25 offensive rebounds.  Old Westbury led the way in assists (13-9), steals (10-6) and fastbreak points (10-4) while scoring 22 points off 20 Dolphin turnovers.  Mount Saint VIncent held the end in blocks (4-2), bench points (17-2) and points in the paint (28-26).

UNITED STATES MERCHANT MARINE ACADEMY UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury closes out its home schedule Tuesday (Feb. 12) with a Skyline Conference matchup versus the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (8-13, 6-11 Skyline) at 5 p.m. inside Clark Athletic Center.  The Panthers are 3-1 against USMMA since the Mariners rejoined the Skyline Conference in 2016-17.
