Old Westbury opens a five-game road trip starting Tuesday (Mar. 19) with a non-conference showdown against Bard College

OLD WESTBURY, NY --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury women's lacrosse fell short after a late second-half charge Saturday afternoon with a 20-17 decision against the Wilkes University Colonels (3-1) in non-conference action from Panther Park.  The Panthers (1-4) move to 2-5 all-time versus Wilkes.

Natasha Treuman buried Yaritza Caraballo's feed 1:08 in to give Old Westbury the early 1-0 lead.  Wilkes responded with three-straight goals over the next 8:35 to go up 3-1. Alessia Drevnyak slipped back-to-back goals (19:45, 15:51) past Colonel goalie Sarah Carlini (3-1) to trim the deficit to one (4-3).  Wilkes put the next four goals past Panther goalie Tazmeya Allen (1-4) to make it an 8-3 game before Monique Joseph and Treuman closed out the first-half scoring with two goals in the final 24 seconds to trail by three (8-5) at the break.

Joseph opened the second-half scoring with her second goal of the game to pull Old Westbury within two (8-6) with 27:36 remaining.  Wilkes built its advantage to nine with a 5-0 run from 27:09 to 18:22.  Trailing 17-8, Old Westbury scored the next three goals before Sierra Duman produced the game-winning goal at 7:25 to push Wilkes' lead to seven (18-11).  Old Westbury used a 5-1 surge, highlighted by Treuman's three-goal spurt over the final 4:59, to settle the 20-17 final.

Allen made 13 saves and picked up four ground balls in defeat for Old Westbury as Carlini stopped 13 shots and Melania Velasquez turned away three shots to combine for Wilkes' win.

Wilkes held the advantage in draw controls (23-15) and caused turnovers (14-9) while Old Westbury led the way in shots (38-37). Both teams drew even in shots on goal (33-33) and ground balls (27-27).

Treuman led the way with career highs of 11 draw controls and eight ground balls in addition to producing six goals (31st-career hat trick) and three caused turnovers.  Drevnyak followed with a career-best four goals (five shots) to post her second-career hat trick.  Hope Matthews chipped in with three goals, four draw controls, four caused turnovers and four ground balls to register her second-career hat trick.  Joseph scored her first-career hat trick with a three-goal effort while Caraballo dished out a personal-best four assists.

Duman finished with six goals as Ashley Burkhardt tallied four to pace Wilkes.  Laura Bayzick controlled 10 draws and scooped up six ground balls.
