Tessitore fans 9 to headline @OW_Panthers Baseball’s twin bill against Bethel

Old Westbury is back in action Monday (Mar. 18) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic against Williams College and Gallaudet University

FORT MYERS, FL --- (www.OLDWESTBURYPANTHERS.com) SUNY Old Westbury baseball continued play Sunday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida with 1-0 and 13-0 non-conference losses to the Bethel University Royals (5-2) from Terry Park Sports Complex No. 3.

Game 1 (7 Inn.): Bethel 1, Old Westbury 0
Bethel used a two-out rally in the first frame to earn the game one win.  Mitch Butvilas slapped a double off Panther starter Patrick Quinn (L, 0-2: 5 IP, 4 H, R, 4 BB, 3 K) before scoring on a Joey Fredrickson single down the right field line for the game-winning run.

Old Westbury was unable to capitalize in the sixth inning as Brandon Wilson (2-for-4) was stranded on first with an inning ending fly out by John Condon.

Panther reliever Matt Bohenek tossed a no-hit sixth inning while Royal starter Jake Marsh (W, 1-0: 7 IP, 2 H, BB, 5 K) went the distance to fire five strikeouts and scattered two hits to secure the win.

Wilson singled twice to account for both Old Westbury hits while Nic Labiento drew the team's lone walk.

Game 2 (7 Inn): Bethel 13, Old Westbury 0
Bethel scored the game-winning run in the first inning off Panther starter Christian Tessitore (L, 1-2; 4.2 IP, 5 R, 4 ER, 9 K) with a Fredrickson (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R) RBI single to plate home Marcus Krupke.

The Royals doubled their advantage in the third stanza using a Parker Mullenbach two-out RBI single to score Butvilas.

Old Westbury threatened Royal starter Brady Leahy (W, 1-0: 3 H, BB, K) with one out and runners at the corners in the bottom half of the third.  Drew Robertson was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame. Michael Borch dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance Robertson to second and Sean Paprocki then stroked one of the team's three singles to push Robertson to third.  Leahy kept it cool and induced a Dom Kriegel double play to end the threat.

Bethel used a five-run fifth inning to pad its lead to seven.  Tessitore's outing ended in the fifth after a Fredrickson two-out RBI single rounded home Sam Horner to make it a 3-0 game.  Panther reliever Joshua Cruz took over and allowed two runs on four hits before recording one out.

The Royals tacked on six more runs in the sixth inning off reliever Alipio Tiburcio (0.2 IP, 4 H, 6 R, 2 ER, 3 BB) to build their 13-run cushion before Mike Abagnale closed out the final 1.1 innings.

WILLIAMS COLLEGE EPHS AND GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY BISONS UP NEXT FOR THE PANTHERS: Old Westbury (2-4-1) continues play Monday (Mar. 18) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Florida with a pair of non-conference tilts from Lee County Player Development Complex No. 3 starting at 12 p.m. with the Williams College Ephs (0-0) followed by a 3 p.m. matchup against the Gallaudet University Bisons (5-10).
